This song is either about getting tempted into fidelity, or just a comment on how "love" starts and next thing the couple are trapped together simply because neither wants to be alone. "One slip, and down the whole we fall" - can be a whimsical comment on how easy it can be to fall in love. i.e. you let your guard down for a minute and you're struck by the falling piano of love (my favourite description of the process!). On the other hand, you give in slightly to your carnal desire and next thing you're in bed! "the hand of fate that seemed to fit just like a glove" - is just for rhyming, it's almost like fate MEANT he was to make this mistake, Gilmour et al needed an extra bit to the line to make it rhyme. He's NOT a very good lyricist people, let's face it (check out most of "On an Island"). "no word, her honour to defend" - at the time, the point of her honour or being chivalrous was not in question, it was just about getting it on and nothing else mattered. Surely to God lads, the line "there'll be no sleep in here tonight" means that they've gone to the funeral pyre not to sleep, but to have hot sex all night?! COME ON! |

To be perfectly blunt about it, Amyl Nitrate is a drug sometimes used in gay sex to relax and dilate the anal sphincter - thus making the sex much easier. Not that I'd know anything about that sort of thing. |

Spot the 2001:A Space Odyssey reference or even 2010:Odyssey Two..... "Look at the light, it's full of stars What's really ahppening? something wonderful" Sounds to me like it's from the scene where David Bowman is entering the Monolith near Jupiter and says "My God, it's full of stars!" - and also when David comes back to Heywood Floyd and when asked "What's going to happen?" he simply replies, "Something wonderful!" |

Malawi is one of the poorest nation's on Earth. Bono was visited this hospital, and was shown around by Sister Ann Carr, of the Medical Missions of Mary. There is usually 300% bed occupancy, with two to a bed and one on the floor. In a recent radio interview Sr Ann spoke of how Kamuzu is a free hospital, and that those with money can afford to have their own bed in other hospitals - but not the poor. "The poor have no choice", she said. I can personally identify with this, having worked in Bugandu Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania for a summer, and seen first hand how beds are filled with extra patients. I now work in a Dublin hospital, where people get upset about patients remaining on trolleys for too long - at least they don't have to share the trolleys. |
