P.S: I think the "shoes make hard noises in this place" is a church. I think a man sees a boy walking down the street, hears his questions on god, can't answer them and so they walk down to a church. On the way the man questions his faith. |

SOME people referanced dogma the movie. I personally used dogma as the word. Yeah, dogma the movie had Alanis as god, and yes, the movie did say "its god" but christian mythology tells us god is indeed a "He" Why? Genesis. God created Adam in his image then created Eve later as a companion. The christian god is very much a male god. Most other religions with a single god (And there aren't that many monotheistic faiths) have a male god too.
Like I said though, I am an atheist. I don't hold myself to god being either or neither. Though if there was a god I would imagine they would have no real physical form... but this is a discussion of a song. Not a thneological debate :P |

We KNOW what this song is about, the band has given a very accurate and specific description of what itis about. It is about the singer's alchaholism problem, it was written in an attempt to regain his girlfriend, unfortunantly he never reformed and was kicked from the band. |

I think the song is similar to the charlie brown song. Not how the first time, the question says "he" after that it says "we." I think the protagonist gets caught up in the question too. "We count only blue cars" might refer to strict and unfair dogma, the crosseyed people may be those who accept religion without thinking.
When he asks the questions, I think he is trying to find religion, but cannot accept it. Its about a question of faith in opinion. Looking for answers, and not getting ones you can believe.
I am an atheist, and I know that when I first questioned god I was eight. It stressed me greatly, I would see friends and family around me, firm in their faith, and I wanted to believe so badly... I just couldn't. Accepting that was hard, and I can connect to this song very strongly at that level. Am I right? Who knows, but I think too many people hear "god" and assume the author is christian. |

Errr... There is no evidence here to support that they aren't being anti-christian. Yeah, they are obviously saying thechurch has just become a bunch of preaches and frauds, but they don't say they ARE religious as eyecon claims. keep in mind that less than one third of the world is christian. I am not saying that they aren't religious, but I see no evidence that they are in this, or any of their songs. |

Only 2 comments? This is an amazing song, I too am having trouble desiphering the meaning. Maybe its about the human fear of death and how we try to ignore, deny and control it? |

He is telling the world to be more open-minded. This is not a song about how "______ needs to beleve in jesus" it is a song saying that people can believe in whatever they want, and that people need to accept the possibility that they are wrong. I do think he is refering to christianity in particular, because not only are they often closed minded (yeah, I am stereotyping ) but many are awaiting a second coming (modern messiah)
This will sound a little rude now, but it amazes me how next to every song on this site is described as christian, people need to realize that less than half the world believes in jesus in the first place. |

I think this song is fairly obviously about drug use. I don't really like this as much as some of their others though... |

Lidz, just because someone opposes christianity, that doesn't make them a satanist.
I am still unsure as to whether SoaD is heavily christian or not. Some of their songs would seem to say so, but many of the things they oppose, and many of the things they say also seem anti-religious. I am not trying to bring up an argument, but knowing this would help me interperate the song a lot better. I am leaning towards very religious right now. (a dissapointment for me personally. |

I am sorry, But this is a real pet peeve of mine. People talking about how they "listened to them before they were main stream" Welcome to the internet, no one cares.
If you don't like the song, fine, (I like most of the older stuff better myself) But don't become an elitist or anything. This was actually the first OLP song I heard, I bought their old stuff later, and I like it all, but complaining about "sellouts" and who listened first just makes everyone involved look like a jerk. |

First of all, a disclaimer, I am an atheist and highly opposed to religion, just stating my biased. I am also pursuing a degree in biology so its fair to say I hold science in high regards.
I hope this song is not about christianity, but I am still unsure. SoaD don't seem so preach-y, so I would say that its more about how humanity should be looking towards its own meaning as opposed to just seeking answers. Science is here for answers, while humans need to find their own meaning separatly. |

I still do not know if this is about faith, but I have a few things to add based on comments posted here.
As for science being a religion, thats just sheer ignorance. Science looks for answers, yes, but that does not make it a religion. As by dictionary.com, a religion is "Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe." Science does not fit this.
Also, I am an atheist. I have no faith in a higher power, or anything supernatural at all. I gain my morals from a wish to treat others well, and I do good deeds from my own will, not for fear of a punishment after death. I do not mean to escalate this argument, so please do not take offence to how I have stated this argument. |
