wow, i'm surprised that no one has said this yet, I think its about his girlfriend who has already died and he's talking about how they would have spent thier last night if they had known that she was gonna die. That's what I got out of it from the first time i heard it.

hmm, the line "you're not ready, you're not read, please stop acting like you are" I used to think maybe he was refering to sex and girlfriend who wasn't quite as mature as him, but now i think it may be about marriage, i think that makes more sense. he proposed and she accecepted but he knows she's really not as in the relationship as she says she is. just a thought.

WHOA, first off, is anyone aware that "toke" means to smoke marijuana? cuz it seems that most of you missed that. second, rogerstigers is right on the money. -now dont take that like i'm saying the other opinions are wrong, i can at least see where the aids arguement is coming from, but wow, i think A LOT of people missed the point of this song. (rogerstigers was the one who talked about the hippie movement in the 60's, just in case you dont feel like scrolling up)

i only read the first 5 pages then this last one, but from what i can tell i'm taking a different opinion than everyone else, which is really suprising to me. I don't think this song has anything to do with tolerance or any of that, i think it's about missing an old friend whom you used to be REALLY close to, but something happened and you stopped being friends, and even though a lot of time has passed(like years) you still really miss them and the way they were before your falling-out.

my take on this song is that he was always a little screwed up, then someone really close to him betrayed him yet again and he became even more fucked up than he was before, and I dont think its so much about losing his faith as possibly thinking that he's too messed up for even god to help him. But then again, we all look at things differently due to our experiences.

Ok, I didnt take time to read ALL the comments, so maybe someone else has written this, but I heard on the radio, and it make COMPLETE and TOTAL sense to me, who had a HUGE crush on a guy who would never be interested (don't we all?), anyway, they said the song was about having a crush, and how you'll do ANYTHING to catch that person's attention, and in the process, losing yourself for a person that will NEVER care at all for you.

Theres a lot of opinions about the REM song and the parents showing up. I think that the REM song was the song that they were "singin out loud when the sun came up" and that it is app. 3 1/2 min long as are all songs. And when it speaks of the parents showing up, i think he is refering to them comming to tell him that Allie had died.

I haven't heard anything about this song before today, and I just listened to the lyrics for the first time today, and I don't know if its about frat boys or not, but the song really sounds to me like its about a girl that he was REALLY close to, probably best friends who grew up together, and she was depressed or has some other mental defect, and she tried to commit suicide, they saved her and put her on all kinds of meds, probably sent her to a mental instutuion, and in this she lost her essence and personality and everything that made her who she was, and he continued to write her, but she withdrew and stopped writing back, and is still stuck there, with no hope.
