| P.s. it's definitely NOT about alcoholism or drug addiction, although the parallels between disorders like alcoholism, depression and narcolepsy are pretty obvious by observations like this. | |
| Third Eye Blind – Narcolepsy Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I have narcolepsy. It's about narcolepsy. It's about automatic behavior, sleep attacks , fatigue and hallucinations, the mixed up thoughts of over-tiredness and how those things rip your life apart. It's about how all you want is relief and knowing you just won't get it. 'A demon in my head but there's no one at the helm' is about automatic behavior. Many narcoleptic people will do things - lucid things like have conversations or put things away or in my case program the computer - in their sleep, and it causes a lot of trouble in one's social life. Funny thing I've learned is people don't realize how much a narcoleptic or insomniac might actually be suffering, or even more frightening how impossible it is for people to tell if I'm awake or not. |

| Rage Against the Machine – Snakecharmer Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I always thought it was about a performer being a puppet, living up the puppet life and supplying the information war. "Satellites and, pair of mirrors and, and a man without a home" - a traveling performer with tricks "With a horse, and a rider, and a clever, cunning killer" - his tour bus, his band, and his manager. "Silent in error and vocal in spotlights" - silent when he's wrong, and always talking when people pay attention. "Lying always sucking on a bottle of, that sweet, indulgent fluid" - self indulgent "Oh greed oh yes!" - self indulgent, thinking only of ones self, and not the importance of the message conveyed "26 years in this stage" - literally 26 years in show biz "Your friendship is a fog that disappears when the wind redirects" - he'll only be your friend if you agree with him and his self-indulgent ideals. "Father's expectations, soul soaked in, spit and urine" - His manager (Father) has told him he has truly earned this "And you gotta make it where? To a sanctuary that's a fragile American hell" - He believes his Manager. His sanctuary is greed. (inquisitive) why is he set on being the problem, and giving into greed and power when his accomplishments are supposed to represent the people he is hurting? "An empty dream A selfish, horrific vision Passed on like the deadliest of viruses" - money and greed is an empty dream that solves nothing. "Crushing you and your naive profession" - your goals are crushing you and particularly musicians in general. His message perpetuates a musical environment that only praises shallow, propaganda-spitting ideals. "Have no illusions boy, Vomit all ideals and serve, Sleep and wake and serve, And don't just think just wake and serve" - he's just serving the propaganda machine, he should have no illusion about what his purpose is. It's disgustingly obvious. "Your friendship is a fog That disappears when the wind redirects You! Interested in you, interested in you Interested in you, interested in you.." - his manager's friendship is a fog, and he's interested in you. More or less a recursive aspect to the song, that means that these people simply pass on the propaganda machine to the next person to pick up on them. I thought it was something like that anyhow... |

Dave always seems to be singing about girls. I'm inclined to agree with his angst about society in that way too. I had a feeling that this song is about trying to convince people that you are an honest person, when really inside you don't believe yourself all the time, you just try. People notice this honesty you portray and you are praised for it. But the self-doubt becomes a part of you, you become dishonest to yourself. All those lies and mistakes you made while insisting that you were being honest and everyone else was dishonest have come to destroy you. I'm not to sure on how accurate it is, but I could probably do a breakdown if I tried... I'm too lazy right now. |

It's not about pills literally. It's about escape again. It's interesting because it's kind of self-analytic I would think, for the writer. It's recursive in the manner that the whole "You're hiding" is a way of hiding. White Happiness: Blank and perfect, too perfect. So perfect you've ignored your own problems while preaching your own misguided way. Beating Those Ladders Instead: Climbing up your ego If you stay... violence: The frustration of trying to correct the world, hiding in this schema, might turn you violent instead of helping. |

I think this song kind of applies to everyone and the way they all need to be broken down. Do they all beleive their own stupid lies? Running away from the breast of Your busy giant healing machine People have their own methods of dealing with their emotions and thoughts. Everyone has some kind of escape plan for reality. This song is about chasing someone away from their teet of shallow escape. |
