Andrew Bird – Not a Robot, But a Ghost Lyrics 17 years ago
"I hear the clockwork in your core
time strips the gears till you forget what they were for"

In the context of this being a break up song, the above lines kind of feel like a
reference to a biological imperative to reproduce. Maybe Bird wanted kids and his partner didn't, or vice versa. Clockwork in your core = biological clock...

just a thought

Andrew Bird – Sick of Elephants Lyrics 17 years ago
And just so there's no confusion this song IS a "hit on the republican party" as you put it.

Need me to spell it out?

-"Money made your eyesight all blurry"

Simple enough, greed getting in thew way of common sense

-"Making lists of pacifists"

Anyone who's against the war is not "patriotic", i'm sure you've heard, or maybe even spewed that rhetoric yourself at some point. Bird is comparing it to the communist witch hunt of the 50s

-"Can't you see how dangerous
The one you chose is"

If you don't know he's talking about Bush you're a moron, maybe an even bigger one than George.

-"Convince yourself and others that these
Fish smell like roses"

I hear Rumsfeld talking about how "gee golly great" the war is going! "if you fly over it, it's not on fire!".
Wow, thanks Donald.

-"Can't you see how dangerous
When you're too content to make a fuss"

And that's an indictment of all of us, content with our iPods and prime time TV and we're all too busy and distracted and fat off our own self satisfaction to care about what's really happening in the world.

For godsake the name of the song is "Sick of Elephants", that's either a play on the word Sycophants (read: The Republican party) or maybe Andrew just really hates pachyderms...but i'm guessing it's the former.

AlexKuykendall -

Are you kidding me? Petty and triffling? You think a war is a petty? You think the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people is trivial? That's NOT part of the big picture?
Or did you just mean the other trivial things this administration and ultimately the republican party are responsible for, like the failing economy, katrina, politicizing the justice department, i mean who cares about those right?

Give me a break, this is what happens when conervatives have good taste in music, they try to rationale the artists poilitical views. Andrew Bird has always had an opinion, maybe you need to read the lyrics for Sovay again.

A fitting last song to cover to this brilliant album.

Matthew Good – 99% of Us Is Failure Lyrics 18 years ago
At the risk of sounding too obvious i really have to assume it's about someone he knew with inoperable cancer suffering a long and painful death and the feeling of powerlessness to do anything about it.

"Styrofoam coffee cups and bagged drugs that never work"

styrofoam cups like the ones people drink endless amounts of coffee from in hospital waiting rooms while their loved ones get fed piles of drugs that in the end don't do much at all.

"Blackbird come the break of dawn
The TVs on, I turn it off
Walk outside, get in the car
Stare at the wheel and fall apart"

that's the most devastating line, the blackbird is death and it's the morning and the is Tvs still on from last night and the finality of shutting it off and leaving that now empty hospital room, trying to hold it together and then just breaking down by the time you walk out to the parking lot and get in your car...wow.

i really love this album

Matthew Good – Born Losers Lyrics 18 years ago
well throwing it in a lake or burying it is pretty much the same thing, lyrically speaking:

"go through it in a lake
go sink it somehwere it can't be found"

doesn't have the same ring (no pun intended), so i think he's just taking creative license.

I think the whole song's about his relationship with his ex-wife, as is most of his new record. I think "Born Losers" means both of them, her for being some gold digging party girl and him for putting up with it for so long. I love the lines:

"She could never say that flat out she don't want me
'Cause I could never say that halfway ain't enough"

scuh a brilliant way to describe a relationship that's only half way there, and as long as he was willing to put up with it she was never going to leave.

I'd also liek to think when he says

"Go put it in the ground
Go bury it somewhere it can't be found"

he's refering to the ring he gave her, you know matt's such a hopeless romantic/idealist that he probably actually bury a ring worth thousands just for the symbollism involved.

anyway great song, great album.

Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics 20 years ago
I think he is referring to his mother, it seems to confirm the line from another brilliant Sufjan song The Seer's Tower, where he sings:

"Oh my mother, she betrayed us,
but my father loved and bathed us."

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 20 years ago
Commenting on the "I am really just like him" lyric, everyone seems to forget the preceeding line, "And in my best behavior...I am really just like him"

I personally think he's referring to the fact that, when he wanted to, John Wayne Gacy was very normal and very personable. He's described as being "adored" by his neighbours. Not that Sufjan is like him, but only when we put on our best behaviour, a good face to the world to hide behind our real feelings.

But he's certainly not saying that he's similar to Gacy on any other level.

Beautiful song I agree.

But why does everyone assume it's about Sufjan?
All the songs off this album are about Illinois and one can only assume he was inspired by places and events and of course people in the state. He himself grew up in Michigan.
