The Antlers – I Don't Want Love Lyrics 14 years ago
Lyrics taken from Album Insert

You wanna climb up the stairs,
I wanna push you back down.
But I let you inside,
So you can push me around.

If I leave before you,
And I walk out alone,
Keep your hands to yourself
When you follow me home.

I don't want love.
I don't want love.

We wake up with pounding heads,
Bruised down below.
I should have built better walls,
Or slept in my clothes.
So if I see you again,
Desperate and stoned,
Keep your prison locked up,
And I will leave my gun at home.

I don't want love.
I don't want love.

Bon Iver – Roslyn Lyrics 16 years ago
Btw, this cd is the best soundtrack since Garden State imho, am i goin out on a total limb here? It is simply amazing. When i saw Bon Iver collab with St. Vincent i freaked, it is so fantastic. I am not a huge fan of the books, but it really heightens the emotional power the book is trying to purvey.

Bon Iver – Roslyn Lyrics 16 years ago
Up with your torret
Aren't we just terrified?
She’ll scream your worry from what you won't ever find

Don't let it fool you
Don't let it fool you...down
Dancing around, folds in her gown

Sea and the rock below
Caught in the undertow
Bones blood and teeth erode, they will be crashing low

Wings wouldn't help you
Wings wouldn't help you...down
Down fells the ground, gravity smiled

You barely are blinking
Wagging your face around
When'd this just become a mortal home?

Won't, won't, won't, won't

Won't let you talk me
Won't let you talk me…down
We’ll pull it taut, nothing let out

I think these lyrics are more accurate that the original posting, i hear a few differences however...

Death Cab for Cutie – Expo '86 Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, its about being stuck in a relationship rut, and to illustrate he uses a sliding board metaphor. Every relationship he has been in goes through the same cycle of waiting, anticipation, the climb, the high, the fall, the pain (the sqeaking of steel on skin, think wearing shorts on a hot metal slide as a kid), and the relationship hitting rock bottom. But no matter how many times he has failed, he keeps getting bck on and getting his butt burned on the same slide. Throughout, he is not just talkin about one relationship, "And its strange, cause they're all basically the same, so i don't ask names anymore," but of multiple failed relationships.

At present, he seems to now be in a relationship that is going well (at the height of the slide) but he is freakin out. He is "waiting for somethin to go wrong" and for her to shoot him in the back, like all the other lovers did. He is totally jaded, and thus cannot trust her or even enjoy the ride because he is so riddled with fear.

Death Cab for Cutie – Champagne from a Paper Cup Lyrics 16 years ago
The speaker is at a cheapskate party where they don't even have flutes to hold the quests champagne in, so they have paper cups. It gets the buzz job done, but its not the same fancy formality that champagne is generally served in. Its kind of a comical situation- this guy is standin round at a party waiting for his friend/date to wrap it up, and being sick of the music, sick of the scene, and sick of the droning conversations. So he is keeping his mouth shut, deciding not to talk to anyone so that hopefully his friend/date will get the hint, and so he won't have to put up with dull conversation. I love his description of the dancers in their "Sad-sorry state, stutter step to those slammin grooves," haha, sounds like a classy party.

So he gets his buzz (which is the only good thing, apparently) thus there is no reason to be there cause this party sucks, and tells his companion, "I think i'm drunk enough to drive you home now."

Haha, i love this song, even the rythmn of the music seems drunk on something and bored as hell.

Death Cab for Cutie – 20th Century Towers Lyrics 16 years ago
Its about growing out of your adolescent mindset by learning how to control your emotions and making right decisions based on logic, and not on what feels good. And more specifically, learning to let go of past love not because it FEELS right, but because it is the logical right thing to do.

The "Colligiate mistakes" are actions enated by having ones heart on his sleeve, essentially things done on a whim without any thought of consequence. But the collegiate formal ideals kills off this youthful ideology, thus rendering logic.

In stanza two, he is trying to convince others (and perhaps himself) that the logical way to live is through the "20th century towers [work, offices, etc] and comfortable cars in motion [commuting to work]." But he is still experiencing youthful restlessness within himself. This restlessness is the part in all of ous that just wants to have fun, follow our hearts, and do whatever feels good. "Restlessness makes you lazy" because nothing of any merit is acheived in frivilous activity.

Finally, he concludes that his problems are more centralized around a girl, and a failed relationship with her. Now he relizes that the logical answer is clear, that he needs to leave her in the past and move on. I love love love that he does not just SAY this, but you can actually hear the painful reminiscence in his voice as he recalls the tender moments they shared together- moments that he has to leave in the past as well.

Why can't every musician write like this???

Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about love gone sour.

As for the title "Skinny Love" it could be an affectionate term he gave his petite girlfriend, or maby the fact that their love is wasting away- shrinking to skinny. The latter is probably more likely, due to the reference in the first line ("Come on, skinny love just last the year").

"pour a little salt, we were never here"
Salt has healing properties, when put on open wound they help the process along. Probably metaphorically speaking, he wants this doomed relationship to heal, to even "Just last the year."
I like the vivid imagery to blood and crushed veneer in a sink, as if a vase was broken in a fit of rage. I dunno if that ties into the salt reference, maby indirectly.

he then basically tells her to let him go, to cut off the tethers binding him to her.

the third stanza deals wih a blaming the other for the failure of the relationship. She couldn't meet with his expectations, either that or she treated him poorly, probably both.

stanza four seems like a mixture of memories, stating why have we gone wrong when we once loved each other? and how even though the burden of pain (through separating) is heavy, it's still hard to "split."

The last part gives us a glimse as to WHY it went sour. it seems she kind of led him on, that she wasn't that into him- when he really cared for her.

He then states that its unlikely she'll find anyone worthwhile, no one will be able to love her for all the stuff she puts her partners through.

wonderfully honest and emotional, i love this song.

Death Cab for Cutie – The New Year Lyrics 18 years ago
My best friend have made the habit of listening to this song every New Year. We grew up together, but recently she moved a few hours away, thus the lines referencing distance are very relatable. But we call each other at the stroke of midnight and play it over the phone for old-times sake when were half a state away. I just love this song!

Red Fox And The Standard Ox – Will You Marry Me in the Baltic? Lyrics 18 years ago
This is such a lovely folksy song. Pretty self-explainatory.

He loves this girl, and wants to take her down to the romantic Baltic (an area in reference to the Baltic Sea, with the surrounding countries of Sweden, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Russia- just to name a few.) to marry her, but he is asking himself questions about the condition of their relationship.

He references that he is holding something from her, and while it isn't really clear as to what those things are, it's clear that these issues threaten to ruin the relationship.

"after nail-biting over writing down" to "i wont do this to myself- He seems to have written her his proposal, and he is nervous about it. so nervous he kinda starts talking to himself stating that he is finished- this wont work. But he loves her, and he (or their relationship) just cant be done. "i wont do this to myself" implies that he can't keep beating himself up.

then he switches thoughts, "Just know, i wanted to love you in all of the right ways." It sounds like he just made some really poor decisions, and wishes he could take them back- but he can't. Now, it's kinda up to her.

i love this song, it's very real and genuine, and i like not knowing exactly what that couples issues are. It's kinda like walking on a beach, and passing by a guy who is really stressing this decision- and overhearing him talking to himself.

Anyways, i hope Red Fox goes far, this is truly a beautiful song.

"You may tire of me
As our December sun is setting
Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
But these wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below"

the charater is speaking to his wife/lover when he is in his old age, at how she may not be physically attracted to him, as he is old.

"Who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside
Someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident"

how he may just barely glence the mirror and really not recognise the man in there, until he remebers how much his body has changed through the years.

"On the back of a motorbike
With your arms outstreched trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
And the city where we still reside"

used as a mtephor to describe how they cannot return to their youth and are stuck in the bodies/place/situations they are in now as they cannot "break from the concrete* (as in flying away from these places/situations/old age)

"And I have learned
That even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men
Cause now we say goodnight
From our own seperate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed
Like brothers on a hotel bed
Like brothers on a hotel bed
Like brothers on a hotel bed"

speaking of a lack of sex-drive (?) (as "That even landlocked lovers yearn For the sea like navy men" like they are stuck in these bodies), so when they say goodnight as they go to bed its a sense of lack of romance, and even a bit awkward. ever seen "mouse trap"? that movie gives you an iidea of the awkwardness of two brothers sharing one bed, just as they do, a metaphor.
