Iron & Wine – Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car Lyrics 16 years ago
I hear a lot of war references in this song, a child growing up in the midst of war. I keep thinking WWII, I get a picture of Nazis persecuting the Jews. The shiny blades of pagan angels were the war planes of the enemy. I see references to Hitler as the father, the King, and the lady descending the mountain to steal socks (take the basic necessities) and "singing something good where all the horses fell" by using propaganda to make all the terrible things going on seem like something good. He is also in the end the pagan angel, who with his gun will show love to his people by destroying religion and the Jews.

That's just what I feel, but I agree the music is great and the song has a great beat to it. This whole album is full of great songs.

Jethro Tull – Cross-Eyed Mary Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Mary is a reference to Virgin Mary, and thus an allegory for the Church. I think he is comparing the organized Church to a 'child prostitute'. The church dines on expensive gruel (fancy priests with gold and expensive wine), takes from the rich (guilts people into giving money, etc), gives hope to the poor. I think the whole song alludes to this theme.

Iron & Wine – Bird Stealing Bread Lyrics 18 years ago
"Still on the stoop watching the windows close" brings images of a couple sitting on the rooftop of a building watching the lights go out in the windows of the buildings around them. In other words, just sitting and experiencing each other as the night goes on.

I really love Beam's lyrics and music...

Iron & Wine – Lion's Mane Lyrics 18 years ago
Has anybody thought about the Lion's Mane as a reference to C.S. Lewis' Aslan from the chronicles of Narnia? In these stories, the lion represents God, a perfect combination of fearful power and yet gentle pure love.
