most people give some meaning to their stuff about their own lifes.
while things in sale in shopes are meaningless (they just want you to buy them "buy buy says the sign in the shop window"; the matterial possesions you left behind in a sale yard implies that you left something behind. and you are leaving them because of something ("why why says the junk in the yard").
i think this song is about what you leave behind after a change of mind. like in relationships, all those meaningfull stuff you want to leave behind after breaking up ("memories of you and me"). like you would be able to leave the reminds of the relation with them. |

i have the feeling that the song goes backward. he starts in the end of the relationship (when he has lost his patience with the anti-war stuff) and start when he was part of the gang, she was with someone else and her thighs were about the same size as his. |
