To me, I've always though that Morrissey was trying to persuade a person to overcome their shyness because he couldn't overcome his own. I read the line "ASK ME ASK ME ASK ME, I WON'T SAY NO, HOW COULD I?" as Morrissey trying to get someone else to proclaim their love for him since he was too afraid to come out of his own shell. In a way, I thought that he was contradicting himself, telling others to get rid of their shyness but actually being shy himself. He was saying that the person who he is admiring from a distance is shy. In my opinion, I felt that Morrissey was in denial about his shyness. |

Whenever I've listened to this song, I got the idea that the protaganist that Stuart Murdoch is singing about was a boy, hence the lines
"you’re off for a week boy"
" Smarter than most boys"
But I completely agree with the interpretation that this song is about growing up isolated and dreaming of leaving it all behind. |
