i don't know what they intended the song to mean, but to me it evokes that feeling you get when you go through a wonderful relationship with someone, but unexpectedly ran into a wall, and it all crumbled into a snowball of painful words no one meant to and awkward cold shoulders and painful distancing that magnified until every word they said turned every good memory into stone and dust.. kind of like when you have a bite of a rich cake but after a few bites the chocolate that first tasted sweet and creamy turned bitter, and after that all you can move on to remember is the clumpy bitter aftertaste...and whatever you try to do to remember those good moments, he just kicked every single one of those good moments in the sun, and now its burnt....gone. |

i lost a lot of myself to depression. it wasn't something i could control, or help. and ive seen myself go through groups of friends this last two years and i've heard the "i understands" and the "its oks" and "its alrights, we understand and we aren't going to leave yous" and a lot of those promises fell shortly after the words were said. and i guess this is what im looking for. someone who will give me a friendship and someone to ave a relationship with who will take me for who and as i am. i'm flawed. i'm gifted. i'm human. take me as i am. |

also, the whole..notion of sailors falling asleep when facing a storm (and certain death) to die comfortably..i think comes from a story in the bible Jonah 1:1-16 (i think)..in which during a storm, Jonah goes to the lower deck and falls asleep, hoping that if death was to come upon them, it would be more comfortable if he was asleep. And from there, it became a common sailor / pirate notion |

About the forty winking..i know that the forty winks is a phrase meaning a small nap. so i'm guessing forty winking in the belfry alludes to taking a short rest.... and as you all know, belfry is a bell tower, and i found this interesting, if you search up the word's history the origins of the word add up to symbolize a peaceful place of safety. "Belfry goes back to a compound formed in prehistoric Common Germanic. It is generally agreed that the second part of this compound is the element *frij-, meaning "peace, safety." The first element is either *bergan, "to protect," which would yield a compound meaning "a defensive place of shelter," or *berg-, "a high place," which would yield a compound meaning "a high place of safety, tower." So adding all that up, I'm guessing that the phrase "forty winking in the belfry" is written to mean.....close your eyes and take a rest, find comfort in a peaceful safe place... this song gives me the chills every time i hear it... its a sort of sweet lullaby, singing you to peace and comforting you so you can slip into death comfortably |

| i think that the "dimes laid in your eyes" bit might be in reference to tradition of placing coins on the dead's eyes to pay the Charon the passage to take their souls across the river Styx. The souls of those buried / cremated without coins to pay the ride, wander along the river lost for a 100 years. | |

its in spanish.. i suck at translating but here it goes after thinking..after seeing.. my pain walk over the waters of the sea warm clarity that i saw walk by my street without knowing what to do, or feel or think.. just that I still go on today, I still.. i still go on today tying myself to you even today, ill give you my love.. my body and soul hides from the sun and escapes at night I still give you today My heart and sould Still today…there still is.. What hides the night That’s going to hold between the two of us Or feel or think My night got filled with light And its because I saw swimming Dolphins in your voice And without feeling or thinking Just that I still go on today, I still Still today, I go on loving you (loving you) even today, ill give you my love.. there are still two bodies with soul that hide from the sun and escape at night and at night they give each other the bodies, the souls even today, there still is Just that I still go on today, I still Still today, I go on loving you (loving you) Still today, my love There are still two bodies with soul That hide from the sun And escape at night And at night they give each other The bodies, the souls Still today..there still is… |

i dont think this song is necessarily about drowning "Saw a sillhouette cross a flurorescent Floating overhead, undoing his helmet Through the murky beams of blue-green sea life I saw him spinning towards the moonlight" -he is at a hospital (hence the fluorescent lights) -the sillohette is the doctor coming up to him - he's probably just worked on someone that means something to him...and is coming forth to tell him the results -he seems to be "floating overhead" because the speeker is most likely shaken up maybe even crying - nervous to know what will happen -the doctor undoes his "helmet"...his scrubs..to come talk to him -the doctor is walking towards him "in a sea of blue green sea life"...probably talking about the hospital walls or the doctors and nurses walking around in their blue / green scrubs....thorugh murky beams - because he's probably crying and it all looks hazy and darkish and gloomy for him -then he spins "into the moonlight" when he hears the results...theyre not favorable then.. "I pulled him in He wasn't breathing His eyes were wide I saw two of me there There's an ugly buzz that hovers just above the quiet I found a way to make it silent" he went to see his friend and he tried holding to him, tried contacting him..talking to him.."pulling him in" but all he saw was two blank eyes staring back at him...and rheres an "ugly buzz above the quiet" probably the noise outside the room..and he closes the door? the buzz being the stuff going outside in the hospital vs the quietness in the room and he's "coming up for air"......hes stunned....all of this is choking him...its hurting him...and he gasps for air..trying to cope with everything going on.. and then the nurses come in or something and see him trying to talk to his friend and him being stunned and trying so hard to reach to him..and tell him he prolly cant hear.. (hes in a coma) |
