| Throbbing Gristle – The Old Man Smiled Lyrics
| 14 years ago

"That's the way the world ends / With a whimper" is a variation on TS Eliot's "The Hollow Men."
Also, this site
http://userpages.umbc.edu/~vijay/TG/lyrics/can_the_world_be_as_sad_as_it_seems.html
Claims that
"Can the world be as sad as it seems' is a line by Charles Manson.
The plot is taken from a short story by William S. Burroughs." |

If I remember correctly, from the 33 1/3 book, Genesis claims he got the lyrics for this from a Ouija board reading. So I assume this is supposed to be a spirit talking or something, probably isn't supposed to be very decipherable. I don't know. Super creepy though. |

The vocals (from the sampling) in this song sound so...faded, tired, and I guess you could say, worn-out. It fits with the rest of the album so well (the whole idea about old age, deteroration, etc, which was further enforced by the title of their last live album "Swans Are Dead").
Anyone know where they got the vocals from, or who performed them? That goes for I Was a Prisoner In Your Skull, too. |

Good point, Israfel.
Cynothoglys, how do you know all this shit? Nonetheless, I'm really glad you're commenting on alot of these swans songs (and some of the coil ones too I might add). |

| Patti Smith – Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) Lyrics
| 20 years ago

That's interesting, alrac. I've never thought of it like that before - that would fit well with the Johnny being dead/murdered part(s) (he's just laying there in his sperm coffin/he lay, pressing it against his throat/etc, etc.) Though I think there's a little more to it than that, but that could fit into it very well.
I've always thought it was about someone (Johnny) recieving some kind of revelation or life-changing experience (not necessarily religious or holy or anything like that). She keeps talking about all these horses surrounding him, like some kind of omnipotent power, and then he gets visited by an angel, and then she goes on talking about "seizing the possibilties (which are "up there in the sea"), like he's reaching some kind of new life-changing ideal or something, and she also talks about what seems to be him dying and possibly coming back...It all seems to me like he's going through some sort of supernatural experience the whole time (and learning something valuable from it - I want to stress that too). The line "the movie kept moving, as planned" seems to go along with this, at least to me. Either way it is quite the powerful song.
Also, does anyone have any idea what she means when she says "do you know how to pony/do you know how to twist/can you mashed potato/do the alligator/do the sweat pea/etc." It always makes me think like she's referring to different dances or something, but I don't know what that has to do with anything (but then again, the middle section IS called "the land of a thousand dances"...) |

The song's about animal torture; specifically vivisection. And yes, the title does imply the "666" thing - they've admitted to that at some time or another, I'm pretty sure. |

Always wondered what this one was about. One of my favorite opening tracks to an album (or more accurately, a disc), ever. |

This song is supposedly Jarboe's observations on one's path to stardom. It's kind of odd to find techno on a swans album, but it fits nonetheless.
The last four lines remind me of Young God in particular; it seems to be about the same type of thing (murder with cannibilism...and in this case some rape thrown in there too?) Adds a MUCH creepier end to the song.
I wonder who "Collie" is? |

| Gary Numan – Cars Lyrics

|
It's about feeling safe in your car. Simple as that. No hidden messages about sex or any shit like that. Numan was attacked several times in the streets of London to the point he ended up carrying pepper spray (which was illegal) around to protect himself, and he always felt like his car was a point of safety. Read his autobio ("Praying to the Aliens") - it explains everything, including the story behind "Replicas", one of his concept albums. Pretty interesting. |

one of the most amazing songs i think i have ever had the pleasure of listening to. the live version off the newest release of horses (the 'legacy' edition) is even more awesome, in my opinion; clocking in at 17 1/2 minutes, containing added sections of lyrics and a reprise of 'gloria' at the end. fucking amazing. alot of the lyrics puzzle me though; i wish there were more posts on this. |

| Patti Smith – Free Money Lyrics

i've always felt like this song was about someone who was in dire need of money so they ended up stealing it - "see those dollar bills swirling around my head/i know they're stolen, but i don't feel bad." and she doesn't feel bad because what she did with the money was good ("i'll buy you all the things you'll ever need/baby, i know all our troubles will be gone"). just my interpretation though. it's just too bad she doesn't get more comments than she does. |
