I would like to share the same view!
I remember coming back from visiting my aunt, with my parents. I was 12 and they turned on the TV and the 3 tenors concert was less than halfway. So I stayed tuned watching the rest. It was Pavarotti that stole me away that night. Nessun Dorma, the O Sole Mio ensemble, Torna a Surrento. Music so moving, singing that touch me. I became an opera lover since.
I must say either you hate Opera, like many people do, or you get absolutely immersed.
For me, the second still applies. Pavarotti will always be a hero that I never got the chance to see live. |

This was the first song I danced with my now-ex-that-can-go-to-hell girlfriend. It was VERY special for both of us and I learned to play it on the guitar (not perfectly but I could sing it). Though it is really sweet, now when I listen to it, brings back sad memories that only builds the wish of shooting myself (and prolly her). Yes people, I loved this song and her deeply. Now, I only loved the song....but...ppfftt. whatever. |

I actually know the feeling that you are going through. What I am surprised to know is that you have even dated other women and you are still not over with your X. And I thought I was crazy. Have you ever thought the reason you are going out with those women is to "replace" the one who broke your heart? That is what I came to realize myself and so far, I have decided to stay neutral. It has been alrite so far, and now I really like this girl from school. However, she makes it hell for me. :-) O well...perhaps someone else will come along! Take care!

A friend showed me this song. I found the music a bit cheesy but the lyrics really got me in. And now I adore it!! It is pretty straightforward: follow the heart.
However, you can also fall in a lie and end up like the song "Overs" (See Simon and Garfunkel). |

The whole song is a circle: notice "the game is over" line and "I stop and think it over", different meanings for over; as an end and as a start. The whole song is about a dead love, the person knows that, totally, but the end shows a bit of denial towards the end of the relationship.
I feel bad in some way because I remember showing this song to a friend who was just separated from her husband. A week later, she divorced the guy. Sometimes I think if it was the song that had to do on her decision. :-S |

how hard must be for someone to do something REALLY REALLY stupid without realizing consequences. In this case, the dude will lose the girl due to a crime commited. However, the whole song is about time going away, time that never comes back, the time left till the morning, the time spent with her: the whole present time. |

Hmm, so I read somewhere comments about Simon and Garfunkel's relationship and I like how they analize it: they are like the "old friends" of the song, but at the same time, they have to give each other space and distance. However, no matter what happens, whenever one of them wants to see the other, they ll always have each other. |

I d like to tell an anecdote about this song. I had a girlfriend I met in Canada who was a foreign student. When she went back to Germany, I would think of her after I left work (say, around 1am for me, it was like 7am for her). So I would imagine saying good-morning to her and making breakfast. Anyway, time went by and one day, a friend of mine shows me this song and I connected to it immediately. I felt Simon wrote this song for all those people that have a love in the distance and I learned to play it on the guitar. Unfortunately, that "girlfriend" became ex.....bitch! |

just want to add something to some comments I read about this song: if you notice the last two lines, both music and lyrics have some irony on it. HE puts some strenght on the "and the rock feels NO PAIN!" and the guitar follows the same feeling. But right after..."and an island never cries" in a very sad, sad tone, perhaps crying? And also, the guitar loses its shine and strenght of the previous line. |

I also want to add, have you noticed the line "so I ll continue to pretend" and also the line from Homeward Boun: "Tonight, I ll sing my songs again, I ll play the game and pretend".
Interesting use of the word "pretend".
I mean, in both songs, I believe Simon is trying to tell us he has to act out, like a puppet, an entertainer. Life of the artist, fictitious to the point of depression. |

at the beginning I didnt pay too much attention to this song, though I must say "Emily" is still a beautiful name on a girl -for me- anyhow...on september I met a girl at school named Emily and she is the coolest and prettiest of all. Now, everytime I hear this S&G song, I have to think of her...!! Argh! |

hehe, something similar happened to me, Tyler2004durden. My long-time girlfriend and had some ups and downs. But on April 05, everything was alrite. May was wonderful, we talked a lot and I thought my relationship was fine as always. But then in June, she started talking to me less and hanged out with this "guy" who she considered her bestfriend. July, she broke up with me. I was devastated. August and September was a pretty lonely time and thought of forget her. Then, when I thought of this song one day, I couldnt stop crying. It hit right in the spot. Sad but beautiful song!! And I am happy to play it on the guitar. |
