The Movielife – Operate Lyrics 19 years ago
my favorite movielife song, i'm sad there's not a huge discussion over it. :\

i relate to this song a lot.

i was in a relationship that wasn't working well after a while, and after a lot of mistakes, instead of just going on with a crappy relationship, i tried to fix it. i asked her too many questions, and said too many concerns, and apparently it's too much work so she just pretended like i dumped her. it was easier for her to do, put the blame on me for being concerned, instead of taking the steps to fix anything. and i'm pretty sure this is exactly what the song is about:

"the way i think youll take it, so i guess im breaking it
every time i open my mouth...and i think you know it"
so yeah. as bart simpson would say, "you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't."

Against Me! – Don't Lose Touch Lyrics 20 years ago
What about AM! singing to Sire records? how is that not selling out?

not that AM! hasn't always been one of my favorite bands.
i was in an AM1 cover band for a while, so if you think i'm not one of the biggest fans out there, then you're wrong. I just think that AM! has lost touch. and i think in this song Tom Gable is admitting it. My take on this song is that Tom has said his messages over and over- about world economy, society staring at blank walls, and much more, and his audiences listen, but overtime you get burned out.

And the fact that since the audience has gotten bigger and more commercialized makes the messages unheard by a bigger percentage. So i think in this song Tom is tyring to figure out what else he has to say, if he has anything left to feel passionate about. And on top of that, he doesn't know who to write it for- he's changed from being in the business so he can't write for himself, and no one is listening anymore so he can't write for the audience. Former Clarity wasn't a complete flop(songs about aids and politics, so yeah), but the too much of the lyrics focus on doing them doing their best not to sell out(they want a bigger platform but don't want to lose control or change any more), and the music is too protected and unexperimental, which was what made AM! more anarchistic than their lyrics- that the music itself said "fuck authority".

i think tom's lost a lot of fate because he got his big chance(eternal cowboy kicked ass- best record ever) and nothing changed for them. so tom is left figuring out why he's still writing music and what the music needs to say, both musically and lyrically.

One of my most cherished posters is is my AM! poster i got signed by tom and andrew, because it reminds me of one of the best shows i ever saw, with none more black, anti-flag, and rise against.

hey, two of those bands also left fat for bigger deals. and while rise against sings a lot about nothing, i support anti-flag. they did sign to a major label, but in this case, i think promoting world peace is more important than keeping a DIY ideal. i just hope that with the next record, tom has yielded DIY for a good reason, and has rediscovered music, and i hope that sire will let tom have the creative control to do that.

so remember- clarity sucked, but there was some hope. it's like anticipation in a movie, and i'm just waiting to see if tom gives into the darkside or not. but it also depends on the fanbase. so to all you motherfuckers who think this is the best record- die, and to all you idiots who think AM! is done- you may also go to hell.
