The Hold Steady – Lord, I'm Discouraged Lyrics 17 years ago
It's not a guy - it's Holly. She's had some well-documented bisexual tendencies, and this is before she herself began her descent into drugs.

"Crucifixion Cruise" established this sort of dialogue between Holly and God, and Sapphire is the "hoodrat friend" who sticks things into her skin ("the sutures and bruises" line).

Her faith has been wavering, which she loses as she begins her journey in Separation Sunday, resulting in her subsequent "resurrection" at the end of that album.

The Hold Steady – Both Crosses Lyrics 17 years ago
There's some obvious references to viewing "The Passion," and filling the girl with Catholic guilt, yet in spite of that she continues to deal with shady people.

I'm almost 100% certain this is Holly in the midst of a relapse.

The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics 20 years ago
Because, Skilla, if you weren't American, then you would be butting into topics of which you have no standing in. Which, considering you were talking trash about America doing just that (not that I agree or disagree), would be quite hypocritical, don't you think?

Now, Calanctus, I think you hit on the head what I was trying to say. Not an anti-liberal message, but it's not going out saying that the Right is to blame for all of the country's ills, either, as much as some people want so desperately to believe their favorite band is doing. Simply pointing out the contradictions of politics in times of war.

Clearly, crazyeyeskilla, you just want to believe that your beliefs are reflected in the song, rather than looking at it critically and try to truly figure out what it means.

How about the dig about "pristine moderate liberal minds?" I don't see a single thing about the conservatives who pushed for the war and voted for Bush. Do you? Really, if you're going to talk about what a song is about, take your personal politics out, as well as the personal insults. Go start a flamewar elsewhere.

What the song means to me is simple: The pointing out of inconsistencies of people jumping out in front of the camera and speaking about what they know nothing about. "Pristine moderate liberal minds." "Pristine" by definition means clean, or uncorrupted. Take the first definition and literally they're calling celebrities with their "causes" airheads. Take the second definition and they're sarcastically referring to how celebrities present themselves in front of the camera as uncorrupt individuals.
