Ben Howard – The Wolves Lyrics 14 years ago
There is a very good post discussing this song here http://www.bywayofbeauty.com/2011/10/ben-howard-battles-with-wolves.html

In essence, the song is about a man dealing with a "Hidden God".

In terms of what Ben Howard meant it to be, It's possible that the line "I lost my patience with the lord" is merely a reference to letting being frustrated with his current situation, thus it's a breakup song. I prefer the alternate reading though, makes the song far more interesting.

Typhoon – The Honest Truth Lyrics 14 years ago
Official lyrics from band's website:

i never said i was honest
but i am true

we all see something different
we all recall something different
when we watch the parade
go marching through

so be kind to all of your neighbors
because they’re just like you
and you’re nothing special
unless they are too

all my time i’ve walked a filed line
i’ve held a vacant sign upon my eyelids
all my time o lord i’ve been so blind
but now i see the light peek through my door-jamb
but there’s no hallelujah it will be gone soon
yeah it will be gone soon it’s just an empty room
this is the darkest cave we never see the day
but slowly make our way up to the mouth

you gonna piss and moan
you let the devil your home

That's a really cool interpretaton and i never thought of it that way.

You might want to work on your own wording though. (or use more than one paragraph =D) At first read-through i thought you were insulting meloy, instead of stating the personality of the speaker (which is what i believe you meant to say).

Its the sound of settling.

Settling for what you have instead of getting more.

Pretty self explanatory IMO. =D

The Decemberists – The Engine Driver Lyrics 17 years ago
I have to agree with jayzer somewhat.

Three perspectives on the same scenario. Its not that one person loves another that they can't have, but rather someone in a relationship.

Each person who speaks (the writer, driver, lineman, and lender) have deep love in their heart for their partner, but it is not reciprocated. This fact causes trouble and phyiscal/emotional pain for the speaker, so much so that he wishes that if their partner doesn't love them, they need to just let them go so they can get on with their life.

Where i think the true brilliance of the song comes in is each speaker. I don't believe there all about relationships perse. For instance the lineman knows that his profession will be passed down to his grandson. He loves his work, but it gives him nothing in return, he lacks the support he needs to get his children and their children out of this lifestyle. This kind of thing can be applied all down the line.

And if you haven't listened to it yet, get the new "Colin Meloy Sings Live" album. This song is on it and its just phenomenal.

Elliott Smith – Say Yes Lyrics 17 years ago
"Crooked spin can't come to rest
I'm damaged bad at best"

Wow.

I feel like this song is about a "friends with benefits" situation as pretencious snob said. They hook up, but the guy develops feeling for the girl by accident. They start to go out, but he is far more into than she is, and eventually they break up because the girl just doesn't like him. The guy is heartbroken, but in the end he realizes that it was for the best even though he still wants her back.

Or maybe i just think that cause I just went through it. -_-

@ the first poster.

Yeah, they'll only ever be remembered for creap, and that little album called Ok Computer, which is one of the best albums all time, up there with In the Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco.

Radiohead will inspire people for a long time to come.

@sambo959

Just enjoy the music, it can mean to you what you want it to mean.

Sufjan did it on Seven Swans, and Jeff Buckley did it w/ Neutral Milk Hotel (In the aeroplane over the sea being thier best CD) and those are 2 of the best CDs of the past decade (OK Computer is the best)

And don't tell me you don't like sufjan.

Oh, and a funny note, the altar call thing is most likely, in a literal translation, about the massive amount of churches in Brinkley.

"Mr. SUFJAN STEVENS: (Singing) In the delta sun, down in Arkansas, it's the great god bird in its altar call.

Ms. KEMMER: It's a place where you can find spiritual solace. We have so many churches."

aerimara is correct actually, as well as racdym, hopefully this, from the NPR transcript about the song. This is the final interview clip:

""We've got to protect him for our kids. If he leaves, then all of this revenue and possibilities that we had will be gone. And that's what I've been telling people, `Love the bird, because I think we're going to love what he's going to do for our town.'"

The bird is saving them, but they have to be careful, or else the bird will go away and they will lose all the revenue."

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 19 years ago
Also, the word 'No' at the end of the song has not been discused (at least on the first page =D). Although it takes up a fraction of the song, its quite possibly the most powerful part of the song.

It makes the meaning of the song completley turn around. Originally it seems like they are about to brake up, and are just fuming at each other, but when they say no, it makes the song seem more like a cry for help, than a declaration.

Just my thoughts

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 19 years ago
I like the demo more (extra/hidden track on the release). Its just him, his guitar, and his voice through a distorter. That vs the piano, him, and the girl (whoever she is?).

There very different sounding songs, and the demo makes the distinction that its one person against the other, vs the regular, final version, which is more haunting, and makes it seem that both people in the relationship are against each other.

mythofmyself, I agree with you, partly.

I agree that the song is about a certain American Delusionalism, I agree its anti-American. (as is the whole album), though I also believe that anti-american can be a form of patriotism (This country sucks and we need to something about it, vs America is an awful country).

I dont agree with the anti-bush. I don't think its specifically against him (though i doubt Arcade Fire likes him), i just think that its a more general idea of anti-politics, both right and left.

Thats what it means to me at least.

submissions
Arcade Fire – Intervention Lyrics 19 years ago
I do not think it is an anti-bush, anti war song.

I do think it has something to do with religion. What that is i do not know. (why I'm on here, to find out).

Things that make me think this.

-The organs.
-The Kings taking back the throne (possibly in reference to the kingdom of heaven)
-The useless seed is sewn (the sower and the seed is a very famous parable)
-Working for the church while your family dies
-Whose gonna throw the very first stone? (jesus says, those without sin may throw the first stone in reference to a stoning of a prostitute)
-singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart
-Neon Bible (it has meaning, though im not sure how much actual it pertains to this song.)

I think the word soldier is much more metaphorical than literal (as lamp said), though im not sure what it means.

I don't know alot about Arcade Fire, if they are big anti-bush, or if they are even religious (or were religious).

And religious music can be amazing, its not all hymnals and christian rock (Sufjan Steven's Seven Swans album is a perfect example).

Anyway, thats just my thinking. Discuss.

Seriously cant get enough of the man. he really can do no wrong.

The whole Seven Swans album is just amazing. The fact that a man can consistantly sing about god, and still be praised be a secular crowed is just astounding. Unlike say, kanye, who makes one song and then the rest arent (jesus walks vs. everything, though i do applaud him for trying) He represents my faith in so many ways, i just cant get enough of him. ahhhh.

Speaking of Jesus Walks, i heard a mash up of Jesus Walks and AHHH Night Zombies! the other day, and my jaw dropped. it was really good, lol.

Anyways i love this song. I have more to say, but i think ill stop here =D

Love it!

Tilly and the Wall – Lost Girls Lyrics 19 years ago
This melodies in this song are the best in Tilly's repetoir. The way the sound builds dynamically is just amazing. When the song goes into "Vivian, your life it told through 19 thousand pages" is absolutley gorgeous, and then when it goes into the "No one will ever save you" it gives me shivers.

It reminds me of "They are Night Zombies!!" by Sufjan Stevens. Just the way the piano, bass, keyboard, drums, bells, violins, harmonies, and sufjan just build so well together is amazing. This song is the same, but does it with less, and does it better.

Sufjan is an absolute genious, but this song just blows me away.

I wish the whole sufjan ensemble and all of tilly and the wall all came together and had babies, and then those babies would make the most awsomeest band ever.

Bright Eyes – Another Travelin' Song Lyrics 19 years ago
Now I'm hunched over a typewriter
I guess you'd call that painting in a cave
And there's a word I can't remember
And a feeling I cannot escape

And now my ashtray's overflowing
I'm still staring at a clean white page
Oh, and morning's at my window
And she is sending me to bed again

Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 19 years ago
DespisebyMorning, hes just telling a story. Its supposed to be sort of a "live" performance, even though its in the studio. Imagine conor starting his set saying "I want to tell you a story". Then he just starts to tell this, and its not as much that hes making it up as he goes along, but more that hes recolecting random peices of information as he tells it.

Think about when you tell stories, doesnt it sound a little bit like that?

Haha, i agree, Nights of the living Dead is overrated in my opinon. "God put down your gun, can't you see were dead" and "The microphone cut off so were screaming at the top of our lung" are to amazing lines, but the rest of hte song is just meh for me.

Fell down the Stairs is my fav song personally.

Anyways, to me this is just about the passion of a new relationship. The first couple of weeks of being together... its awkward, your still figuring each other out, but your totaly engrosed in each other and are full of optimizim towards the future, that you can conquer anything.
