Also with the last thing I said -- since the song kind of builds on itself, it could also be a life kind of thing. Like how when we're younger we're a lot simpler, but the things that happen when we're young affect our future, and how it all sort of pieces together as we progress. |

I'm going out on a limb here. Could it be about people striving to be perfect? It could fit, I think. And how it says our work is never over, because throughout life people keep wanting to get better. Just an idea. |

This song is absolutely amazing. My dad used to listen to it, and I've loved it ever since. I think the song is really self explanitory. The dad is always busy with his work "There were planes to catch and bills to pay" And he was never home to spend time raising his child "He learned to walk while I was away" And as most young boys, he loves his father regardless and wants to be just like him when he grows up. The son's fine with his relationship with his father probably because he hasn't known anything else. "Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today, I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok.'" In the end, the son grows up and has a family of his own. The father is now trying to have a relationship with his son, but his son is too busy for his dad now. Dad finally sees that his son has indeed grown up 'just like him' and doesn't have time for his own father. |

I feel that it shows he has a relationship with a girl. And suspects his girfriend of cheating on him. Although while he suspects it, he imagines it in his head. "I'm coming out of my cage, and I've been doing just fine." He was locked up in a cage, because he couldn't harness his emotions. Although when he comes out of this cage, he says he's doing just fine, trying to convince himself that it's all in his head. "Gotta, gotta be down, because I want it all." He wants her all to himself, so of course he'll be distraught thinking she's cheating. "It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this?" She kissed the man she was having an affair with in his head. How could it have ended up like the scene he portrays right after that, I think he means. He's falling asleep, his head filled with the thoughts of their encounter. "It's all in my head," "My stomach is sick." "Jealousy, turning saints into the sea" It shows how jealousy could make the 'saintest' of men go corrupt in their own mind. "Choking on your alibis" I think this is him imagining all her excuses of why she had been out, away from him. Nervous, as she does not want to get caught, thus 'choking' over her own words. I believe that the ending verse is how he realizes that it is all in his head. But it's just the price he pays, his destiny is calling him. He pays for the price, seeing as this is all his imagination, and he's bringing it onto himself. "Open up my eager eyes, 'cause I'm Mr. Brightside." He needs to open his eyes in a figurative sense, and realize that this is all in his mind, and he is the reason he's restless. |
