Simon and Garfunkel – Save The Life Of My Child Lyrics 15 years ago
With an author like Paul Simon and a song like this, I think it's incredibly stupid to not include the "hello darkness my old friend" part. Paul Simon is a brilliant song writer which means that much have extreme significance. People are discussing what the problem is and why the kid is on the ledge, the secret is in that song. And this song is explaining, via a story, this world described in The Sounds of Silence.

Iron & Wine – The Night Descending Lyrics 15 years ago
I can rarely understand him, but by god Sam Beam is an amazing lyricist.

Notice stanzas one, three, and five all start with a line referring to the night.
And stanzas two, four, and six have something about pacifying in the third line.
The even stanzas also start with missing things. (religion, fingers, angels)

I get a very cowboy theme, from the music and the lyrics. Shady deals, stealing trains, wooden coins (which I agree means worthless), roosters, sun rises..

From here it could just be.. that.. or maybe specific things only he would know. But it means certain stuff to me because they are so open ended and the images are BRILLIANT.

Does anyone else hear "fucking long" instead of "far too long"? I'm pretty sure I hear a distinct 'K' sound.

Fine points, but I don't think that there's competition for the kiss. I think they it could be interpreted as a little girl who's embarrassed to kiss her dad in front of her parents.

The only problem with that is the Belated Promise ring... But I actually think it fits better as a father to daughter thing.

Led Zeppelin – Down by the Seaside Lyrics 18 years ago
What are they talking about twist though?
Maybe they are talking about the late 50's and 60's.
Their childhood thus what they remember as 'golden years'
Especially Plant, who wrote the lyrics obviously, who was a huge
country boy/hippie sort of thing. He was, possibly is, the type of
guy who likes to just lie in the grass and search for insects.
So he's referring to his childhood, or at least that time period,
because he remembers things being slowed down and less
urgent etc.
That's my only guess.
lol

Hmmm.
And my 2 cents.
I generally hate country.
I also hate rap.
But at camp last year I heard these guys rapping and long story short, it was amazing. It was just raw, and just 3 or 4 guys singing about whatever came to mind with whatever they had on hand. It was modern day blues.
See, when you hold grudges against genres or really anything, all you're doing is missing out. If there's some great thing or song or whatever of that genre, but you're too stubborn to accept it, then I really don't care, but all you're doing is preventing yourself from liking a song. (Or whatever you apply this to)

Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics 18 years ago
Love this song. It's so beautiful and erie at the same time. The opening lines are wonderful to set off the mood.....

And on a side note... age has never really been an issue guys.... I'm sure there were plenty of 12 years olds who loved S&G when they were around. Now it's just a matter of what music they have been influenced by... yea... you guys kind of make a big deal about it lol

I would say more about the song but.... yea.... it's kind of been covered. And one LAST note I promise lol For the people who are so demanding at what it means.... the ORIGINAL meaning might be specific, but lyrics mean whatever the interpreter wants them to mean. If it gives me a certain feeling and makes me a feel a certain way..... isn't THAT explanation what it means?

I sure think so.

My little opinions.

I really hate the beginning of this song lol

It kind of sounds like they're talking about the audience.
Kind of like Zeppelin's The Ocean

It really is lol
I have the live version and it pretty much dominates
They were great live.. not the same... psychicness of Zeppelin..
But they had a really cool unique live sound

Plus they were just crazy

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't wanna bash the LOTR theory simply because it's already been done, lol
But I would like to point out, as far as I know, LOTR and The Hobbit were the only Middle Earth releases BEFORE '71. That's important because Numeanor would have only been known from a few references therfore Plant would not have written a song involving it like that. And... the Gray Havens is where the Elves came from... not Numenor lol

As with most Zep songs and... well pretty much any song or lycic or poem, it doesn't have ONE true meaning. It may have been written with one meaning in mind, but it REALLY means what it means to YOU. If you think it means this, then it effects you in that way where as someone may be effected in it differently.
That proves there that it doesn't matter what it was supposed to mean, but what it means to you

*correction* Page uses fingers and pick

The fact that it sounds SOOO much like a love song is because....it IS!! He loved his dog as much (more or less) as he would a blue eyed girl

Led Zeppelin – Hots on for Nowhere Lyrics 19 years ago
The entire album was recorded while Plant's wife was near death, and Plant was in a full body cast and then a leg cast and doctors weren't even sure if he would be able to walk again.... hence the attitude of these lyrics

It's talking about his wreck (the first stanza) and then how his friends (particualarly Pagey and Grant) didn't visit him and it made him mad. The other stuff is about him being in the middle of nowhere and how he had to hitch a ride to save his and and wife's lives.

If you realize it was about the wreck, it's a very straighforward song so I'm not going to explain it all..

at first look i thought the lyrics on this song were horrible (just the first line had me going... wow.... but actually they're quite good)

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 19 years ago
It was written with Joni Mitchell in mind. When I heard this I figured she would rock. And, while she does, she sounds nothing like this song. lol Which brings one to the realization that the song is dedicated more to her than based on her music. In How the West Was Won, after the part about playing guitar and singing, Plant says her name, thus proving this theory

and how does the fact that led zeppelin was diverse, prove they didn't invent anything? lol Just because this and a few others aren't Heavy Rock or Heavy metal material, doesn't mean they didn't play/influence the genre and everyone in it.

Everyone earlier was talking about how it was a folk song, I always thought it leaned a little bit more toward a bluesy feel, but if you listen.. it's kind of a spanish... Flemenco TYPE of thing. Definite Spanish roots

Yes, wow, we are having a 5.5 hour Zeppelin party of the DVD in just under 45 min... yea, anyway, I LOVE how it starts with Bonham beating the crap outta the drums before they start... and then it starts and he just beating away and the guitart riffs are edgy and the bass is just loud and crude and Plant just wails.. you don't really start better than that

Yea, but it's also at about 10 seconds.. and it's not Plant because he's singing. At songfacts.net, it says that it is Page, maybe 'reminding' himself to stop. But the 2nd one isn't near a time when he stops, and it sounds more like Plant

K V I was just about to say that. I am reading that book right now. Lost Horizon is about Shangri La (a paradise). It's all over in the Kashmir area. I guaruntee you that this is at least 90% of where the song is from. Plant was very into English....culture and literature

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
I hear people bash classic rock songs all the time for not being meaningful in lyrics, but they never mention why they think they aren't.. And JPJ did SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much to Led Zeppelin. He did so much. He contributed with great bass, keyboard, mandolin etc skills. He wrote a few songs, and was a spectacular arranger. He was simply amazing. Definetly the most musically inclined. He just stayed out of the light, liked it better than way.

Also Mr. No Name... uhhhh Plant didn't really write the lyrics for When the Levee Breaks... yea.... and he says himself that some songs aren't supposed to have any meaning at all. He wrote them to be plain and simple. Also, no idea what the heck the monkey on the back thing is, but if you listen to the older Zeppelin stuff, a lot of it was completly obvious that they were just on drugs and wrote stuff like a lot of people, maybe not you I dunno, claim. Look at Hots On for Nowhere... wow, completely stoned, but if you look at this or Houses of the Holy, you can tell the difference between stoned and thought.

submissions
Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy Lyrics 19 years ago
I just would like to take this opportunity to Give JPJ some credit. He always stayed in the back and never gets much glory because the other three were charasmatic and all considered one of the best in their 'instrument'.
John Paul Jones though plays amazing bass (Lemon Song) and just... so much feeling and stuff (Ramble On). Him and Bonzo were always so tight which let Plant and Page just ride around on top which was HUGELY important to Zeppelin. He also did great keyboards as well as mandolin and a little guitar. Also, he arranged a lot of their music. He is amazing at arranging. Listen to some of the stuff he arranged in session work for a good example. He was the musical, though all musically inclined, genius of the 4

Led Zeppelin – Friends Lyrics 19 years ago
Uhhh, first I'm gonna contradict. I PERSONALLY never would have chosen... beautiful for this song, but it has always been one of my favorites. ~ Also, they were completely satanistic. But a lot of songs were directed (ie Houses of the Holy) to showing people that santanism isn't all hate and whatnot

This song is truly amazing thing. I love the guitar and then the violin stuff just adds sheer power. Very unique sound, very unique song.

Led Zeppelin – Over the Hills and Far Away Lyrics 20 years ago
I know this is from the first page but it is REALLY bugging me. Page did a LOT in contributing in other ways than just singing. If you look, Page contributed in EVER song, but Plant did almost everysong. Plant wrote LYRICS smart one. He had a gift for that and he used it. Come on people. Don't speak unless you know for sure what you're talking about.

... i don't like how i worded that last phrase, because this is supposed to be about what songs mean, barely anything is going to be certain, but just put, a rumor or theory is... or i think...
A lot of people put rumors on here about how the name was started. THATS NOT HOW!! There are tons, rumors start from people saying.. o their name is from Keith Moon saying The New Yardbirds were going down like a led balloon. Please just say.. i heard a rumor, or one theory.. come on...

Hate the album version. Why may you ask? Because i heard a live version first. Live version DOMINATES, lots of emotion and the guitar solo is one the absolute most epic and amazing solos i have ever heard. (BBC version). Uhhhh, if you don't like it, i strongly suggest you listen to the live. Do this with every Zep song because they were 4000 times better in concert most the time

That reference to arabs being evil and elves being evil is definitely not what plant ment, but that's an awsome idea. That's what i love about this stuff, no matter whether the authors even wanted it to be meaningful, people interpret it the way they want to and, regardless of what the writer wants, it affects them in that way.

Led Zeppelin – Fool in the Rain Lyrics 20 years ago
Page couldn't keep up because he was getting bogged down on drugs. Don't do drugs kids. Great song, that riff will never be forgotten.

I have noticed that almost EVERY Zeppelin song has a jimmy riff, or something at least like plants screaming in immigrant song, that if you hear once, you will never forget. You'll go... hmm, that sound familier no matter how long ago it was you heard it. Jimmy was amazing.

Yes, that's why i mentioned motifs. People always think that lyrics only can mean one thing, involve one reference. Come on. It's not all LOTR, but i scoff at people who think that Zeppelin has nothing to do with them. Its completely undeniable. But back to the motifs, I'm not exactly sure what they mean or anything, but ten years is definetly one and i imagine it's something that largely impacted Plant's likfe LIKE a girl slipping away from him.
I heard that's what Ten years Gone is supposed to be about. Very likely.

Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy Lyrics 20 years ago
From the houses of the holy, we can watch the white doves go... what do you picture.. a beautiful pure land with doves.. magical and spiritual.. holy... then satan's daughter comes out. Satan lives there, he isn't evil and violent and horrible like everyone says.

There's an angel whatching over him and he has a sword of gold. He is a warrior for the holy.

You're stoned, you're dizzy, you don't know what is happening... then (the only time during this song with an overdub of voices which, correct me if i'm wrong, give a almost... hypnotysing feel) Let the music be your master.. guide your way.. are you gonna listen and let us tell you what is right -- [the previous verses] --

You can keep crying because you're confused but it won't do anything. Everyone lied to you about the world, was this all you knew? --[basically, they lied to you and that was your world.. this is the truth]

So i know what you're going through and how to fix it. Don't really know how to phrase this part but basically he's saying, See? i'm right for you

A lot of people are hurt by 'Christians' because many act like hipocrits. They lie and and do dumb stuff. Peope react by hating them, being confused, and doing drugs. Zeppelin had a large influence from a large satanist who was betrayed by Christians. I don't know about them 'cept i know that Jonesy used to play organ for church so maybe he had that happen to him too, i can't say. But either way, i believe they are saying, they lied to you, you're getting high, you don't know what's happing, THIS is what is right. Right here, satanism is all evil and burning of crosses. This is the right way.

As much as i disagree with the lyrics, they absolutely amazing.

Led Zeppelin – Communication Breakdown Lyrics 20 years ago
Ummm, misty mountain hop... misty mountains...gollum.. not ABOUT LOTR but obvious influence. Yea, Zeppelin ripped off a lot of lyrics. But notice, it was, mainly, the early days when they were based almost soely on blues. They didn't do the right thing and give credit to the artists which they've done now, but if you notice, pretty much no one even cares about those lyrics. And Dazed and Confused along with most other ripped lyrics don't have set lyrics. They are just old blues shouts. And it's Page's magical riffs, and Jonsey's brilliant arranging skills that made their versions so good. (I'm not saying that it wasn't with help of Plants singing or Bonham's playing, but i'm just talking about what we think about when we hear the songs. They pretty much rewrote songs with the same lyrics)

Nobody knows the real meaning and never will, but it is NOT Christianity in the way most of you are saying. So many people take Zeppelin as Christian because of stuff like this, stairway to heaven, houses of the holy... but wow, they were NOT Christian.

Now i love Lynyrd Skynyrd, don't know why, just love their sound, but they don't sound anything like Zeppelin.. hmm..don't know where i was going with this.

Ummm, the stones never did what led zeppelin did... uh... they are in completely different genres.. um... yea, what the heck. People are so quick to bash Zeppelin.

I also don't like this song all that much. I like Moby Dick way better personally

Great song. I love how simple and fun it was. A lot of Zeppelin tunes are so... serious and deep leaving many people to believe that they were so serious and stuff. Songs like this show that they liked to just have fun and play simple and light too. You can even hear them laughing at the end.

I looked all over to find tabs and most of them either said. "and it just get's too fast here" or just sucked. I finally found one and.. wow. There is only.. a few places with another guitar, but it's pretty much just Jimmy. Absolutely amazing
