Harry Chapin – The Shortest Story Lyrics 19 years ago
Harry Chapin was an avid protester for word hunger, he created the charity World Hunger Year. This song is about a baby being born to extreme, inescapable poverty in which he has no hope of surviving. The music to this song is haunting.

Harry Chapin – There Only Was One Choice Lyrics 19 years ago
One of the many things I love about this song is the comparison of America to the sinking Titanic. America, the most powerful country in the world - unsinkable - is slowly capsizing while Harry feels he is nothing more than a fiddler, singing as the ship goes down.

Good dreams don't come cheap
You've got to pay for them
If you just dream when you're asleep
There is no way for them
to come alive
to survive
- this is my all-time favorite quote, it's very inspirational. You have to work hard to achieve your dreams, or else they'll stay just that- a dream.

Patti Smith – Glitter In Their Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
I see this as being about child slavery in third-world countries.
"Diamond dust making you sneeze" is a reference to forced mining in Africa; "Your body a commodity", meaning that they're bought and sold frequently. Meanwhile, "Dow is jonesing at the bit", meaning that America is essentially ignoring this problem and profiting off of the backs of these children.

Patti Smith – Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) Lyrics 20 years ago
At the end of this song, Patti softly sings a couple lines from "Gloria". (saw this sweet young thing, humping on the parking meter, leaning on the parking meter) In her latest release, "Horses", Patti blends these two songs together perfectly to make Johnny the first-person POV in "Gloria". Perhaps these songs are about Johnny's search for redemption?

This song is about her son coping with his father's death. In order to come to terms with it, he imagines his father leaving earth in a spaceship, and wants to go with him instead of being left behind on earth.
