Hozier – From Eden Lyrics 11 years ago
The author who "slithers" from Eden is clearly a reference to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, there to tempt this woman, the object of his desire, into sin. There is a reference to the "other man" she will be cheating on. In this context, there is only one person the song is addressed to. "Honey" and "Babe" are one and the same. She is more hesitant to engage in this affair, while the author shares that he once would have felt the same moral reservations, but experience has taken away that idealism/innocence/chivalry.

Kodaline – All I Want Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it could be taken either way. I'm sure they wanted it to apply broadly to any sort of loss. Sometimes a break-up can seem just as devastating and permanent as the death of a loved one. Either way, it is a beautiful song with plenty of emotion.

The National – Afraid of Everyone Lyrics 15 years ago
Another great song, reminds me of a paranoid schizophrenic off his meds. As far as "yellow" versus "your", it definitely sounds like he's saying 2 distinct syllables, so I think he is saying "yellow", especially since it fits the color motif.

Muse – Unnatural Selection Lyrics 16 years ago
Matt is an atheist. He has said so in interviews. Hence his "Thoughts from a dying atheist". I don't think this song is explicitly about religion vs. science. Rather, unnatural selection refers to how people are being killed.

Editors – Papillon Lyrics 16 years ago
"if there really was a God here, he'd have raised a hand by now."
I really love that line. As for Papillon, I think both the butterfly and Charrière interpretations could work. Not a fan of the musical direction these guys have taken, but the lyrics are as strong as ever.

Glasvegas – Geraldine Lyrics 16 years ago
The songwriter wrote a heartfelt song from the point of view of Geraldine. The listeners can then apply the song's words to their own lives by substituting their loved ones for Geraldine. In this way, listening to the song is almost like getting a touching message of love and support from your loved one. That's what I get from it anyway. Your mileage may vary.

The Stills – Being Here Lyrics 17 years ago
According to an interview I saw, this is a song about them being on tour in the South and what it was like "being here". As a southerner, I can relate to it. Beautiful song. Great to see the Stills back in form.

British Sea Power – Waving Flags Lyrics 18 years ago
I like that interpretation regulus43.

I almost get the impression of them being at the pub watching the match with some mates. Some Czechs show up and they tell them they're welcome in the bar. Their race and country doesn't matter. Only their love of beer and sport.

And that's a good metaphor for the larger picture of the immigration issues.

Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend Lyrics 18 years ago
This might be one of the worst songs marketed to young kids that I've ever heard. I found the video quite offensive, promoting bad values to our kids. It was basically glorifying a bully. If it was a guy instead of a girl doing the bullying, there's no way it would get made, but for some reason it's ok because she's a pretty girl.

Sufjan Stevens – The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about his love for Jesus. "man on the cross"? Duh.
Just kidding.

Randy Newman – Political Science Lyrics 19 years ago
Is it sad that when I first heard this song, I had to check to make sure it was satire? I'm afraid that if Randy played this song down South, he'd get cheers for all the wrong reasons.

The Killers – When You Were Young Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about a girl who is looking for a savior and the guys who are all too willing to take advantage of that. The last line is the most intriguing since it seems to imply that Jesus was just like those guys.
And yeah, it's basically just ripped off Springsteen lyrics set to ripped off U2 music. But it works.

Līve – Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
So what happens when you look at a dead baby? Do you no longer believe? This is (by far) my least favorite song by Live.

Muse – Knights of Cydonia Lyrics 19 years ago
Matt doesn't believe in any gods, so that's why he uses the lower case and says "a god" rather than "God". Only when you're referring to the notion of a single god would you capitalize it.

Editors – Fingers In The Factories Lyrics 19 years ago
Anyone else get a Gang of Four vibe from this song?
Also, I'm pretty sure it's "Come on out tonight, come and see the SIGHT" not SIDE.

Muse – Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics 19 years ago
Not my favorite, but it's not too bad. They probably just chose it to bring in a new audience. I could see it working as part of the whole album, but I hope the rest of the album isn't like this.

Tori Amos – God Lyrics 20 years ago
I think you're a little off Pacojon.
That's one part of it, but she's saying a lot more than just that. She's definitely questioning the very idea of a biblical God.

Green Day – In the End Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's more likely written to an ex-girlfriend who dumped him for a big dumb jerk who will probably end up cheating on her and leaving her in the end. So he's telling her not to come crying back to him expecting him to be her "special friend" when that happen.

Green Day – Coming Clean Lyrics 20 years ago
Frogg, I think that dude was kidding. No one can be that stupid (I hope)
Just to sum up the meaning of this song, Billie wrote this song from the perspective of a 17 year old kid coming out in order to express his own personal feelings about being bisexual.

submissions
The Tears – Brave New Century Lyrics 20 years ago
Also, note the lines about religion breeding like a disease and people spitting on refugees, a general them throughout the album.

submissions
The Strokes – Ize of the World Lyrics 20 years ago
I figured the cut off at the end was because the world had been vaporized, not because of censorship. Either could make sense though.

John Lennon – Give Peace a Chance Lyrics 20 years ago
Bush and his ilk think you have to have war to have peace. Hasn't worked out too well, though.

submissions
Ben Harper – Black Rain Lyrics 20 years ago
Ben Harper calls out the Bush administration re: the response to Katrina and their general lack of concern for the working poor and minorities.

Josh Joplin Group – Camera One Lyrics 20 years ago
It's about what lies behind the facade of fame and success. So many people buy into the myth that those things will lead to happiness. "Sightseers see What they want. They're selling star-maps To the sun"

This song is about what happens when these actors and trophy wives are "off camera".

D4L – Laffy Taffy Lyrics 20 years ago
This comment thread is more hillarious than the song itself. Sexxy_HoNey has got to be a joke. Maybe I'm getting too old, but I find it hard to believe anyone seriously writes like that.

submissions
Kanye West – Jesus Walks Lyrics 20 years ago
Count me as another atheist who likes this song. The Chris Milk video for this song is amazing as well.

submissions
Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree that people are reading into this too much. Televangelism is the most likely meaning.

submissions
My Morning Jacket – Gideon Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm not completely clear what the Gideon reference is about, but I do think this is partly about the Iraq War and the Christian Right in America.

submissions
Muse – Thoughts of a Dying Atheist Lyrics 20 years ago
Matt is an atheist himself, so this song is kind of a thought experiment where he envisions his last thoughts on his deathbed. Some people make it out to be him dissing atheism when nothing could be further from the truth.

Weezer – Say It Ain't So Lyrics 20 years ago
Steven refers to his stepfather. The brand was Heineken, mentioned in the first line.
