Regardless if the killings happened in the 70s or Victorian times, I think the song gives an overall cryptic feel. Like most have mentioned, it is a cautionary tale used to keep children in line and the song emits an overall dark, almost paranoid sensation. Even if Meloy didnt stick to the facts completely, he is one of the best storytellers in the scene today that you have to give him credit for creating such an atmosphere in less than 5 minutes. |

I think this is a great sound for them to experiment with. Given, it may not be their niche, but I think they did a good job on this song... it has a feeling that is different from the Decemberists' normal "stage production" sound. As far as bands taking new directions, I think there has been a lot worse out there than this. |

Perhaps Im taking the vague route, but, to me, this song seems to be about being stuck in a situation that one really doesnt want to be in and the longing to be held on that safer ground. From the verses, one could say that he betrayed someone or did something to someone that he really regrets and just wishes to wash his hands of everything, wishes that it never happened in the first place. |

Sea Change is a great album, as is Midnite Vultures. That's why Beck is great-- his albums are all so versatile. I mean, how many of us would still adore him if every album sounded the same?
This song is incredible... "I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed"-- brilliant. |

This song is amazing. Im kind of going through the same thing and when I listened to this song after the my first "epiphany" about my situation, it was almost like an instance of clarity. And I think everyone can relate to this song and its theme, making it more human. The Wrens are incredible!! |

I love this song because, although the situations seem a little unusual, they always remind me of the little things that go into a relationship. Every occurrance in this song may seem small, but it all adds up to be something enormous and I think everyone can relate to that feeling. |

I dont listen to rap-- at all-- but I have such a soft spot for this song... it's hilarious. Im not a huge fan of Kanye and his politics, but I can't help but love this song. |
