Straylight Run – Soon We'll Be Living In The Future Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm gonna go for a long shot with one:

He's asking someone to take a risk with him and just stay with him. They're going through some tough stuff, but if they just stick it through things will be fine, and (soon) in the future they'll be happy again.

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think this is just another "let's get together" love song, but more of a "let's try this again" love song.

In the first verse, it mentions how fast the weather can change, and his feelings for someone changed that fast too. It also changed his mind because NOW he knows what he wants to do with himself.

In the second verse, he says "remember", implying that their first try was a while ago, and now they're trying again.

The "lottery/paycheck" means he wants to work at this relationship, rather than just sit back and let nature take it's course.

"Besides maybe this time it's different..." also implies that they've tried before, and now they're trying again & hopefully this time it will work.

Sunny Day Real Estate – The Blankets Were The Stairs Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about a break up.

He feels so inferior to her.

He just wants to fix things and bring her back, but he knows he can't.

Obviously she gets over the break-up quicker than he does. He does, in the end, want to get over it too though.

I might be completely off, but that's what I think.

The Faint – Take Me to the Hospital Lyrics 19 years ago
The first time I heard this song, I had an image in my head that this person had fallen from dancing drunk on a table. Now they're being taken to a hospital.

My Chemical Romance – It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Fucking Deathwish Lyrics 19 years ago
ps. who cares if anyone's a "real" fan? stop being so fucking pretentious. who cares if MCR has "sold out"? kudos to them for being so successful! isn't that almost everyone's mission in life to be successful? it pisses me off. it's their fucking music and lives. not yours. yeah i understand the fangirls piss you off because they piss me off as well with any band but whatever. if you really like the music that much, you're not going to stop listening to them just because someone you don't like ends up liking them. that's pathetic. ignore them.

My Chemical Romance – It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Fucking Deathwish Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a rather vague summary of what I think it is. But simply I think it's about a boyfriend/girlfriend (or boyfriend/boyfriend?) relationship. But whatever the sexual preference, this was definitely a hard relationship.

It bsically talks about how this person put our narrator through hell and back. They went on a rollercoaster and in&out of this relationship (maybe more than) a few times. But despite all of it, our narrator still wants to be with their lover and will do anything to be with them.

It's really sweet actually. Very well written too.

Thrice – Image of the Invisible Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm basically repeating what everyone else said and adding on a bit, so if you really don't care, feel free to skip 1-6. But I think 7 & 8 are kind of interesting.

1.) Just because a band is not a "Christian band" does not mean they can't write about Christian values or the Bible. But again, just because a song has Christian references does not mean it is a Christian song.

2.) I fully agree with Kraig, P4P3R T1G3R2, darkd0g3, and LionOfJudahIsKing.

3.) Thank you LionOfJudahIsKing, Thricecube and smashing_the_radio.

4.) Prvt_Stash. You cracked me up. Great comic relief.

5.) I really don't think it's up to us to completely interpret what the song actually means. I mean none of us are Dustin or any other members of Thrice, correct? How could we possibly know off of just listening to the song what he meant in every line? Don't get me wrong, I accept everyone's opinion and view on the song and took it to heart, but just because YOU viewed it that way, doesn't mean it IS the way. Even if you look at the different political, religious, and "rally calling" views of the song that different peopel from each group wrote about, they all wrote about something different. I believe someone even applied it specifically to the punk subculture. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Everyone applies it differently. Stop bickering.

6.) Okay now on my opinion: I do have a Christian view on this song. That's just the way I interpreted it. It's also the way I experianced it. Okay it's testimonial time so if you're not interested, skip the next paragraph.

I have a friend who (before Vheissu/"Image" came out) was having a terrible time with his walk with God. He was claiming he had no purpose in life. That he was alone because he never felt God there. He felt worthless and depressed. He was doing things he shouldn't have been doing. Then this song leaked. He listened to it nonstop because he's a BIG Thrice fan. When the album came out, I saw his attitude and spirituality change (Maybe it was because the album came out, but I think it's because of the messages in the song). He started getting a bit more involved in church. He was happy again. He let go of the partying lifestyle. He got connected to God again. Now maybe this wasn't because of Thrice, but I believe it was. Honestly, I believe God will work in whatever way he can to get us back when we slip away, and that's exactly what he did for my friend. Now would God do that through a song that wasn't based on Christian values? I really don't believe he would. But hey, prove me wrong.

I'm not saying that this song applies ONLY to Christianity. It does apply to other areas. It's good to be open minded.

7.) Actually, this album isn't the only one with referances to Christianity or Dustin's spirituality. Maybe I'm just way too observant and know all the Thrice songs way too well, maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions, but it seems though as if every album reflects (or songs on the album) Dustins spirituality at that point in time.

Listen to "Identity Crisis" (the song), I believe it talks about the struggles we have when we first give our live to God. Remember he wrote this when he was still a teen, when he was possibly starting his walk with God. I really don't know how else you could apply that specific line to life.

In the album "Illusion of Safety" it seems almost as if Dustin's spirituality slipped. I mean talks about a lot of negative things in life. He even has a suicide song and a few suicide references in there. Keep in mind this is when Thrice's popularity was growing exponentially. It's easy to lose focus on God when times are good.

In "The Artist In The Ambulance" he starts putting more trust in God (The Artist in the Ambulance) but questions Him a bit (Stare At the Sun). He also questions society and challenges them to act with "Christian" values (Cold Cash and Colder Hearts).

Now, "Vheissu": It is obvious that his spirituality (or at least knowledge of the Bible) grew immensely. There are so many obvious references to the Bible (yes the Bible can refer to everything, but there are only so many things that refer to the Bible) whether it be stories or just values. Yes I know that "The Earth Will Shake" was based off a poem by C. S. Lewis. but he was Christian author, and wrote about many Christian values and stories through symbolism, kind of how Dustin does with his lyrics. If you weren't told that C. S. Lewis was a Christian when you read "The Chronicles of Narnia", you probably never would have guessed it (if you weren't a Christian yourself that is). Same thing with Dustin. (BTW, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" is all symbolism of how God saved us. Just how "Image of the Invisible" is a song of encouragement to Christians, but not only that, it's a message to everyone that there IS meaning in life through Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior and like it or not, we are all MORE valuable than what we think we are).

This is all my own interpretation. It does not mean that this actually happened. Anyway, you can add that point on to the Christianity side of this Internet debate about the view point of a song. We need lives...

8.) I would like finish off by saying that I'm not trying to bash anyone's point of view. I'm simply stating mine, which every person is entitled to.
So what do I believe this song is about? IT'S ABOUT YOU.

It's about Christians and their struggles with Christianity and wanting to be with God. It's about teens and punks and about how they mean something in this world and they're more than just what the world thinks and that they do amount to something. It's about those lost children who also matter in society and are not worthless. IT'S ABOUT YOU. and it's encourgement to you to not give up because you're worth something

So the major question about this song "Who is this song refering to?". The answer is simply: "You".

PS. I would love to point out how every Christian had support for their opinion on how it did refer to the Bible, but hardly any non-Christians had proof on how it didn't. Please don't bash me on that. It's the honest truth.

Pss. I just realized how long this is. Forgive me.

Bright Eyes – Ship in a Bottle Lyrics 20 years ago
yeah right along with what Gråvejr said. i saw bright eyes at the grand olympic last summer and he said something to that effect.

so going along with that, i think its about that type of "fantasy" relationship that we all dream of having but we know we could never have it because nothing in this world is perfect.

like the first verse, you just wanna be this everything for the one you love. you want them to feel perfect and safe. but you know all you can really be is this type of disruption ("the weather against your window...").

then i believe snipets of the song talk about the different types of chaos in the world that keep the world in order. like "bacteria breeds on a microscope slide". we normally view bacteria as a harmful thing but the truth is we need it to survive.

then i think its also about this girl who wants this perfect and beautiful relationship and she's being kinda naive about it. but the guy is warning her not to wish such things because they'll only happen in your head. and even if we could get it to be perfect, we could prolly figure out a way to get alot of other things perfect and we would never grow old.

and as for the ship in the bottle metaphor... i think some magnificent and complex thing put in such a small and confined area so that it can never be disrupted by the impurities of the world.

also i guess the last prechorus of the song im guessing talks about how the girl used to be disappointed in this lack of "perfect" relationships but she then realizes, shes had them all along. and shes holding her breath for the rest of her life.

thats really all i can pick apart... and i dont even think alot of it is right. i kinda wanna take it to my english teacher because she can decipher any damn poem in like 3 seconds.

merry christmas kids.

The Decemberists – The Gymnast, High Above the Ground Lyrics 20 years ago
i believe its about a break up after a long relationship, or finally letting go of someone you held onto a long time. my reasoning:

it mentions "'it' long has arrived". and in every time "it" is mentioned, it has some parallell with a relationship and the context it is used in, implies the end of one:

1.) the gymnast: something very delicate that takes alot of work and practice. the gymnast messes up & falls down, or fails.
2.) the snow: also delicate. comes not so often, but usually 'prayed' for. the cold weather goes along with lonliness.
3.) the bosun: well first off a bosun is "a petty officer on a merchant ship having charge of hull maintenance and related work" (Webster). so the fact that the bosun has lost his compass suggests that relationships can be lost if you dont tend to it.

and the chorus obviously:
"you've been slipping away" self explanatory.
"the weather will hold/it's been ever so ever so grey." suggests that this was predicted (or that the break up was really recent) and this depression will go on for a while.
the 2nd part of the chorus... i have no clue. haha.
i'm guess that it's going something to do with what toadtws said. and although these terrible things are happening, all he can do is think about the ex-partner's beauty.

also the lethargicness of the song and some words ("lazy", "long time" & "long arrived", "tarlatan holes") suggest that the break up was dragged out.

"april marches on" suggests that the ex-partner is strong through out this, and moves on well.
