Audioslave – Like a Stone Lyrics 20 years ago
at first: i think it says "if we're good, we'll lay to rest" not "if a god, we'll lay to rest"

for me it looks different. i think he is singing less about physical death, but more about his death as an idol, which probalby will never come. like kurt cobain, he doesnt see himself as a "special famous person" we made him to. remember why soundgarden broke up. he wishes for a normal death, he wishes to be mortal, like everyone else. he doesnt want his physical death to be a spectacle (remember the media when layne staley died). he wishes to be forgotten sometimes and that only those people care about his death, that had cared about him as the human he is. all of us don't know chris, we only know his music. he doesn't want people, who don't really know him, to care about his death. here is what confirms my view:
" On a cobweb
Afternoon
In a room full of emptiness
By a freeway "
thats how he feels. we made him to something he can't get out (->cobweb). but forced to be someone he doesnt want to be doesnt fullfill his life (in a room of emptiness). the freeway nearby signifies that everyone of us is free in everyway, but as a famous person you are a prisoner of society. it's like a candy(freedom-freeway) that hangs from the ceiling and a kid(chris), who tries to grap it, is hold down by someone (us) so it cant reach it.
"To a place
I recall
I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The ground was bled
And there you led me on"
heaven is the place, where he is a normal unfamous person. he recalls this place, long ago...the time before he got famous and he wants to get back there even if the life wasn't that easy (sky bruised. but as the chorus says...he will never get there...he will be physically dead, but as an idol we made him immortal and he will wait for "his heaven" forever.....like a stone (no longer able to change anything on his situation)
"Of all the things i've done
For all that i've blessed
And all that i've wronged
In dreams until my death
I will wander on"
he even regrets "for all that i've blessed" . i think if he could choose again, he wouldn't want to become famous. he is dreaming about a normal life but he will "wander on" looking for a way to get back, but at the same time he knows, that there is none.
the whole song is about the fustration about becoming aware, that he cant change the person we made him to and that we made him to so much more, than he wants to be.
