The Smashing Pumpkins – Thirty Three Lyrics 13 years ago
After reading these comments, I feel like all of my english teachers must be unanimously having heart attacks somewhere.
Now that I got that off of my chest, I want to start by saying that I was raised Catholic. I must also state that I now consider myself to have no religious affiliation whatsoever.
I have been listening to this song for years, and I have never once thought that any part of this song had to do with Jesus or religion. (except the steeple line, in which he is obviously stating sarcastically after referring to his walk as blasphemous and jangley)
Coming from someone who takes very little of what songs say literally, I would say that the meaning of this song has to do with someone going through a very emotional part of life. This is an ongoing topic in many of the pumpkins songs and also gives the listener a feeling of looking inward on their own lifetime and experiences.
It IS a beautiful song, and feel free to take it how you like, but I just don't see this song as religious at all. People who are deeply religious see their religion in a lot of things throughout thier lives. (even toast)

Rammstein – Spieluhr (English) Lyrics 20 years ago
wow, I gotta say, this is a poor translation of this song. Please check out the band's website for the Jeremy Williams translations, they are much better. btw, Mensch is better translated as person, and is used more commonly in the german language than in english.
So my understanding of this song is this: a small child is put to rest, although his soul seems to remain. This spirit is portrayed perfectly as a child singing a children's song. It is obvious that the soul is not ascending to heaven (und kein Engel steigt herab) and the fact that no one is 'crying' on the grave gives a feeling of loneliness.
As the song nears it's ending, someone finally hears the child and saves it. At this point it becomes apparent that the child is being used metaphorically, to show that although a person might want to be alone, he/she might find him/herself lonely and afraid, especially of death. Rammstein's clever way of changing the song's meaning at the very end.
Definately one of my favorites though :P
