| Tori Amos – Silent All These Years Lyrics | 18 years ago |

you all seem to be trying to peg this song to one topic. tori's songs rarely adhere to one thing. there is often a dominant topic, but part of the beauty in the obscurity of her music is that she ties together all kinds of emotions from different areas of her life- lyrically and musically- that pull together into one song. it really could be about all of the things you are talking about... rape, unwanted pregnancy, alienation in a relationship... but it's more likely an outpouring of built up frustration over any number of them. here's another take. maybe it's not the boy suppressing her. maybe this song is about frustrations with a relationship, but one of the things making her stay is that in this relationship more than any before, she feels like she has a voice. "i love the way we communicate" this could easily be mistaken for sarcasm, and it very well may be. it may not be him she's frustrated with, it's with her inability to express herself sometimes. "you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts" i don't think this is another girl, i think it's her. this person she's in a relationship with percieves her as deep, but she's worried he can't handle all her emotional baggage. and all the while will all that baggage make him long for the last girl. "but what if i'm a mermaid in these jeans of hers with her name still on it" all these things make her want to bail on the whole thing. but she reminds herself that she can communicate with this person better than she ever has before with anyone else and built up trust like that doesn't happen to her often so she doesn't care. "hey but i don't care because sometimes, i said sometimes i hear my voice" just some thoughts from a girl who hears a lot of herself in the song. |

just another take... I could be about that fragile time right before you get to the relationship where both parties are putting cards out on the table. He's really invested, but she is one of those girls who is too nice to just say no and he thinks she's invested too. "I never knew that everything was falling through That everyone I knew was waiting on a cue To turn and run when all I needed was the truth." It may be obvious that he is shooting a little high, which is why "Everyone knows I'm in over my head." "I wish you were a stranger I could disengage"... he wishes he could blow her off like she is blowing him off, and not be hurt. "With eight seconds left in overtime"...It appears that he may still have a small chance depending on what sport he is thinking of. 8 seconds is still enough to make a shot in basketball. "She's on your mind"... This could be a 3rd party. Another has entered the picture and he doesn't stand a chance. Basically, it's about a guy getting jerked around by a girl who was too nice to just say no. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Lightness Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
ok, i'm gonna go out on a limb here, but i'm going to say that the writer has read The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. in the book, a major theme is "lightness": the idea that when we live in such a way that we have little affect on the world as we make decisions. example, if i have no friends, i'm not in a relationship, and i do not keep in good touch with my family, i am light. the decisions i make affect no one but myself. the book is about such a man, named tomas, who meets a woman, falls in love, and marries her. his addiction to women did not hurt anyone when he was single and had severed contact with his ex-wife, son and even his parents, but now that he is married, it hurt his wife. over the course of their marriage, he cheats on her probably hundreds of times and it tears her apart. the song would fit in well with that. it's about tomas, or someone like tomas, who is tempted to make a decision that will hurt someone. "oh, instincts are misleading you shouldn't think what you're feeling they don't tell you want you know you should want." i think my theory may be further proved by the song "soul meets body." soul and body were another theme in the book. several chapters were named "soul and body." that being the idea that body wants, even craves one thing, and soul knows better. lightness allows soul and body to be detatched, but heaviness creates conflict between them. when soul meets body is love. all else is meaningless. incredible book. even if you don't agree with my interpretation, go pick it up and read it. you won't regret it. |

| Fiona Apple – Never Is a Promise Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i think this song is about coming to the realization that even though you may love someone, they are not what you need and they will not be able to completely understand who you are. one think fiona is: self aware. she knows he'll say he'll do anything to be with her and he'll make empty promises he won't be able to keep later. he'll never leave her, or get upset, or frustrated or hurt her, but she know's he will. she has the choice to try and go through all the crying and fighting, or end it now and save herself pain. | |
| Coldplay – Shiver Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i agree, it's about unrequited love. but maybe he's on the verge of winning her over. he can see that she might just feel the same way he does, but she's afraid so she puts up a tough front saying she sees straight through him. | |
| Coldplay – Warning Sign Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| the same guy that i equate with see you soon i equate with this song. he dumped me b/c he was scared and i was slow to open up. my personality is such that i intrigue people, but when they finally realize that i am actually really guarded and they might not have what it takes to open me up, it's not as romantic. so this guy dumps me and puts the lyrics to this song on his profile when he starts trying to get me back. this song is about being afraid to commit but realizing you have and freaking out, so you wimp out. then you realize you lost something worth commiting to. "you were an island and i passed you by, you were and island to discover." it sounds like a girl that he found out there was more too than he originally thought, maybe one that he would have to work hard to get to. it's about letting something great go and trying your hardest to get it back. | |
| Coldplay – See You Soon Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| not sure what it means to chris, but for me, it is track one on my life's soundtrack. i dated a guy that had been pursuing me for almost a year. i was afraid to commit, i'm a very guarded person and i'd been hurt before. i felt good about things, but i'm still slow to open up. i guess i thought he knew that, but he didn't. he dumped me, late at night while walking in the rain. we didn't know each other well and we hadn't dated long, but it really hurt me b/c it took a lot for me to open up as much as i did and trust someone. it closed me up a lot and made me even more guarded. "see you soon" was just kinda how i felt about him. he pursued me again after he figured it all out but it was too late. he tried to talk to me one night and i wouldn't look him in the eye and he said "you know we can be friends." that reminds me of the line "when all you want is friends". all he wanted was friend status. but all i wanted was to wear a bulletproof vest and say see you soon. telescope lens denotes distance, that's all i wanted. i didn't want to be bitter, but i didn't want to be friends. | |
| Counting Crows – Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i've heard he went to a movie, fell in love with monica potter and then she heard the song and they started dating... if the movie was patch adams i have a few thoughts. one, how appropriate that he fall in love with a deeply troubled character with a tragic story. two, in that movie, her character talked about being a butterfly so that she could have wings and fly wherever she wants. it was a big symbol in the movie. i've noticed duritz uses the word butterfly a few times in his songs: butterfly in reverse of course, and another line about catching a girl in a butterfly net (anna begins or round here maybe? i can't remember). just a though. | |
| Counting Crows – Holiday In Spain Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i really don't think it's a happy song. i think it's about pretending to be happy to get through something sad. "She's my angel She's a little better than the one that used to be with me Cause she liked to scream at me." he's running away from a breakup. it really sums up that feeling you get after you've broken up with someone and you've stumbled upon someone really fresh and exciting who is everything your last significant other wasn't. it's exciting for a little bit, like getting drunk, but then you wake up the next morning with a hangover. it'll distract you for a bit, but it won't make the pain go away. | |
| Counting Crows – Why Should You Come When I Call Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i know so many girls like this. can you really blame a guy for wanting free meaningless sex when there are girls out there without enough respect to say no? the guy feels bad, but he's not invested in it and there was no commitment or deal so he can justify his own exploits by saying that she knows what she's getting into, but he knows just as well as her that she is getting hurt. | |
| Counting Crows – Rain King Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| it's about how emotional he is... how else would he be able to write songs like he does. he can't let himself be truly happy, he's a ball of turmoil and drama. he references it in goodnight elisabeth when he's talking about how he wil deal with loosing elisabeth "if you wrap yourself in daffodils, i will wrap myself in pain. if you're the queen of california, i am the king of the rain." he deals with life by being melancholy. maybe its about dealing with being a part from a girlfriend, or just breaking up with one. | |

| i too saw cc in concert (beautiful night with a harvest moon that looked like it could be on their next cd cover). he sounded pretty bitter about this song. he said she "dicked him over". | |
