| The Divine Comedy – If... Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Not a very good song for valentine's day says I though made all the mroe great because of that. "If you were my dog I am sure you'd like it better Then you'd be my loyal four legged friend You'd never have to think again" I think Hannon's character is this song is a man who wants possession of a woman. He wants her to be utterly devoted to him, to the extent that, he doesn't even want her to think for herself. This is a sinister obsessive song but made all the more brilliant and honest for it. |

| The National – Slipping Husband Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Male regret - emasculated and pathetic. No-body father, drunk in the corner boring his friends. |
| The National – City Middle Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| A need for Special Pretty things. It's all too much. Too much sensory information. | |
| The National – Abel Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| The National – Val Jester Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| R.E.M. – Drive Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The futility of being a self-proclaimed rebel. The passion but also the failure of youth. "What if you rock around the clock? Tick-tock. Tick-tock." always seemed to me to be a reference to the teddy boys of the 50s and their rebellious Rock n' Roll music. |

| R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Losing one's convictions - possibly influenced by Stipe's acceptance of his bi-sexuality and the tensions this had created in the band. Like Beckett, Stipe's writing rarely has a closed interpretation. R.E.M. communicate feelings, atmopshere and emotions rather than set narratives and ideas. |

| R.E.M. – Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Don't wade into the carnival backwaters or the sinister alligators will get ya! City-folk you're in a dangerous part of town. This ain't no place for a gentleman to venture into. |
| R.E.M. – Diminished Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Desperate sad repression. "I didn't hurt the one I love" Deny it all! A court case of a murdered lover used as an analogy for the feelings of persecution and denial created by irrevocably hurting the one you love. |
| R.E.M. – At My Most Beautiful Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Simplistic and beautiful. The little oarsome things that make up love. A gorgeous song which makes me think of my beloved :) Aww the song makes me happy just thinking about it! :D |
| R.E.M. – I Believe Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The joys and fears of youth and aging! Adventure in the south! :-D Wonderful wonderful song. |
| R.E.M. – Suspicion Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The mechanics of paranoia - don't let yourself think, just allow yourself to slip into the same old neurotic routines. That bitter self-deluding feeling you get when you feed off your stereotyped ideas of types and intuition. Short skirt = sexually promiscuious; red lips = sexually promiscuious; black bra = sexually promiscuious etc. etc. until you're so wrapped up in it and hypnotised by your own delusions you KNOW you're right. |

| James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Blunt sees a girl he wants to be with. Can't have her - moans about it with a rhyming scheme reminiscent of the Spot the Dog books. Generic song that's easy to relate to. |
| The Tiger Lillies – Rapist (Bad Blood and Blasphemy) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
It is easier to blame the victim - through ascribing blame to the weak and defenceless society gives the offender a pat on the back. (Just-world hypothesis 2005) |
