I think this song is about a guy's eternally optimistic attitude being tested for the last time, with this rejection. Each time this happens, he repressed his feelings and acts as 'Mr Brightside', putting a positive spin on everything. With this, it finally breaks. |

I think this song is also a statement about his generation, having grown up in the materialistic 80's. Instant gratification (here we are now, entertain us) mixed with a rejection of society. The last few lines sum that up, with his cry of 'a denial' again and again and again. He's stating how his generation denies all society's niceties and empty rewards - an emblemic of grunge music. Cobain seems like a modern-day Holden Caulfield. |

It seems to be, as many have said, the treatment of a brother with a mental illness, seen from the perspective of a child (like Neutral Milk Hotel like to do). I think that perspective adds something to it, when clearly disturbing events are seen through innocent eyes.
The fact that so many references can be found (Greek Laika/Alexander the Great, Laika the dog/Sputnik 2 Director) shows just how talented AF are. |
