The Blow – Parentheses Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's interesting that she says both "babies feel the world" and "you're NOT a baby if you feel the world." Maybe in the latter she's referring to the insulting meaning of "baby," so it means "you're not pathetic if you feel the world."

Damien Rice – Childish Lyrics 18 years ago
it's cute and fun. it reminds me of my friend who is never serious. he's always playing around.

"I try my bestest, well as far the restest
Well it's just stuff that comes out wrong, and gets misunderstood"

he's trying to be funny, but sometimes his jokes are taken too seriously, or sometimes he goes too far. he doesn't mean to actually hurt anyone.

"But in sooth I know not, why I am so sad"

sometimes he has emotions that he can't express and can't understand, but he has to hide what he feels because no one expects him to be sad. he has to play the clown even when he doesn't feel like it.

i like what ohpioneer said. and then there's something i noticed--it sounds to me like the woman actually had sex
("It's one thing being cheated
But you took him all the way through your bed")
whereas he did not go that far. perhaps he was on his way home with another woman, and he came upon his girlfriend/wife having sex with someone else. so they are both cheaters, but yet she went farther. then they separated for a while to cool off, and now she's coming home so they can try again.

Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics 18 years ago
I really like what Landerson said. most of us have gotten a very similar impression that it is about sex and love and deception, but saying that the volcano is not a volatile relationship but rather a depressed man lashing out at the ones he loves...that is a very interesting way of looking at it. however, i do think that it is a stretch. i think that meaning may be unintended, rather than being what damien intended. still, i applaud your interpretation.

ok ok i'm sorry i thought riposte was not a word. don't know what i was thinking; i feel retarded. i'll try to redeem myself by telling you that i got an 800 on both the writing and critical reading sections of the SAT, but you probably won't believe me.
but anything about geordies or newcastle accents is NOT obvious to an american, so please drop the condescending tone.

wow, i'm not even in a relationship (or in love) and this song has been stuck in my head for two days straight. (i still think the bells are like christmas ha ha.)

i think it's very interesting that neither the man nor woman is ever described through visual imagery, yet the song is about beauty. She is beautiful to him when on the phone, he is beautiful to her when she is pretending to sleep. the idea that they don't even need to see each other to see beauty in each other is beautiful itself, no?

R.E.M. – Lotus Lyrics 18 years ago
I think my dad said something like this song is about him appearing on a show, and he was accused of being sacreligious, so he wrote this in response. I had always thought it was about being heretical because the lotus is a religious symbol, and he is eating it. Does the TV show theory have any merit? Or did i just totally make that up ha ha...

wow i don't even know what a "geordie" is...clearly, being british really helps one to understand the song! :)

Fiona Apple – Criminal Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow, i really like what you said, that sullen girl...I had always thought of it as she was a bad girl in the sense that she had always played with men, and now she's actually fallen for one. But love is such a new feeling for her that she's afraid and confused, so she hurts him because it's what she's always done to men. Now she wants him back because she realizes that she can't live without him.
But looking at it from that angle, that she's being sarcastic...really interesting...Reminds me of this poem we read in Spanish Lit by Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, called "Hombres Necios". You can find a translation online. It's a really sarcastic piece, basically about how men can't stand women who are cold, but accuse us of being sluts if we are receptive. Could go on and on about that, but the poem speaks for itself.
So I like that this song's really about society's ridiculous expectations for women to be very pure, until they're in the bedroom. But why is that meaning difficult to see? Taken on the surface, the song is reinforcing these expectations. That seems counterproductive, since most ppl see it that way.

Led Zeppelin – Over the Hills and Far Away Lyrics 18 years ago
Praise! Good analysis, ZapHead. I've read all these pages so far...you people need to stop arguing about things that are unimportant for the MEANING of the SONG. And don't shoot down someone's analysis unless you actually have evidence for the contrary. It makes for a weak argument.

The last two verses intrigue me because the rest of the song seems pretty straightforward, so here goes...

"Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing"
Well, this is pretty obvious...if you are thinking, "I wish I would have..." then you are lame.

"Many many men can't see the open road. "
Some people go through life without looking ahead or behind, without looking around in general. They don't learn from the past or look toward the future. Shame.

"Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know"
This is the hardest, but I think I might get it. He's referring to the anaphora (look it up!), "Many times". The listener is "guessing" at what he means when he says "many times i've lied", etc. because he does not specifically tell us an incident. But yet we do "know" what he means because we've been through the same basic experiences...everyone has lied and listened, etc., so even though he doesn't specify what he has done, we should all know what he's talking about.

i agree that it should be "i am young" (whoever wrote the lyrics down put "young" the second time they wrote the chorus), and i also thought it was "you react to my repast"; is "riposte" even a word?

Juanes – Fotografia F/ Nelly Furtado Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is not in portuguese... although nelly IS of portuguese descent.

i like the guitar in this song, though the other instruments or whatever they are sound kinda cheesy. don't see how it's a feel-good song, unless you have no idea what they are saying! the chorus translates to:
"Every time i look for you, you go
And every time i call you, you are not there,
It's for this that I should say that you are only in my photos."
They've broken up, and both are still in love, but there's a disconnect. Neither is aware that the other still loves him/her. That's kind of funny, actually, that you said it was a feel-good song; it sounds so peppy, but really it's kind of tragic.

Crash Test Dummies – Swatting Flies Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe no one has commented on this song...i love it! The music is so simple and calming, and the song is so nostalgiac. I'm not even old, and i still get that feeling very strongly. My favorite part is how he connects it all with the "swatting flies"...you're like, "omg, i get it now!"

The Rolling Stones – Streets of Love Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the chorus says it all nicely. He feels so old and weary after his many relationships. So many have been sad that the streets are drenched with tears. His experience with love has been generally tragic.

Robert Plant – Tall Cool One Lyrics 18 years ago
he's a player... a tall, cool guy who has fun getting every woman he meets into bed with him. this one is a bit of a challenge, as in she actually says "no", and he's like "come on, i'm in love with you, so let's have sex." the "lighten up" kind of ruins the effect of "i'm in love with you," since love is usually serious. it sounds rather annoyed, not very loving...

there's so much sexual innuendo in the lyrics, but that's pretty self-explanatory.

i don't like the meaning of the song much, but i like the style of the music and song. i think those clips at the end sound pretty cool.

Sounds like he's advising an attitude of patience, "well i still don't seem to care" meaning he doesn't let the bad times get to him.

R.E.M. – Bang And Blame Lyrics 18 years ago
To me it sounds like his girlfriend or whoever just wants to have sex (she's banging him), but she's also blaming him for something. like maybe their relationship sucks except for the sex and she's saying that it's his fault, but he thinks it's really hers. also it sounds like maybe she could actually be a prostitute because of the part "i have your number...". Overall, i guess he's disillusioned with their relationship because it's just carnal, just banging.

David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes Lyrics 18 years ago
When i first heard this song, it sounded very cheerful, upbeat, and optimistic to me. then i actually listened to the lyrics. the references to major tom sound to me like he is poking fun at himself, and at people like us who interpret his music. it's almost like he didn't intend major tom to represent a drug addiction, so he is amused that people interpreted it that way. Also, the title is "ashes to ashes" supports what other people have said that this song represents his re-birth, or closing a chapter of his life. i am too young to know his history, but i am not sure if this gives me a fresh look at his songs or a wrong one. oh well.

is it just me, or do those bells sound christmas-y? yet the song isn't christmas-y at all...i always thought that was odd, like they don't really match.

i thought that the singer's voice sounded pretty different in this one, and then i noticed that it's in a high falsetto...because he's singing as a woman. i thought that was interesting.
