| Zac Brown Band – Colder Weather Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Thank you for sharing your story. I enjoy these personal interpretations so much more than reading people's attempting to decipher the songwriter's intentions. As an artist, the goal is to move people and create an emotional reaction. The greatest works of art, whether it is music, film, visual, or literature, are the ones that create a personal reaction. Everyone is unique and each person will have their own interpretation. Thank you for yours. | |

Sorry... the last line is "Say what you want to hear." *want to = wanna* |

| Minipop – Precious Lyrics | 15 years ago |

You're precious, so selfless. You begin a hammering sound. What you want to know? Say what you want to know. What you want to know? Say what you want to know. You're selfish. Oh, you're selfish. If you will hear me, my request is that you're not so cold. What you want to know? Say what you want to know. What you want to know? Say what you know. What you want to know? Say what you want to know. What you want to know? Say what you want to know, here. |

| Keane – Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I love this song because it harkens back to the days of the Romantics -- Wordsworth, Shelley, Coleridge, and Keats -- escaping the stresses of the world and into nature. | |

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song. It really grew on me the more and more I listened to it and let the music grab a hold of me. The kind of emotional ride the song takes you on is reminiscent of "Transatlanticism". By the time the final verse is repeated you're lost in Ben's words and sentiment... "Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole Just like a faucet that leaks and there is comfort in the sound But while you debate half empty or half full It slowly rises, your love is going to drown" This is only my interpretation because these words spoke to me personally. Some people find a way to let sadness seep in and ruin a perfectly functional relationship because of past demons that have not been exorcized. I feel like the singer is making this observation on his subject. His subject is allowing feelings of discontent to seep in, and while she is unsure how to perceive it, the singer's feelings are adversely affected by the debate. It isn't a sudden deluge, but a tortuous, gradual drowning of their love. I LOVE Death Cab for its ability to foster many interpretations to their music. |

| Ambulance LTD – Stay Where You Are Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Occam's Razor says... this song is about staying where you are, whatever that means or wherever you are. It's a wonderfully composed song with a delicate balance of all musical elements. It's my favorite song on the album. | |
| Motion City Soundtrack – Hold Me Down Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i agree with catcrazygirl2002 that the verses are the contents of the letter, while the chorus is his reaction to the news. she has reached the conclusion that the relationship has reached its full potential and she must progress beyond its constructs, while he seems to have understood the shortcomings yet didn't realize the severity. What I want to know though is if my hypothesis of this song's format being action-reaction, then what's the news he's mulling to break? the spirit of the chorus alludes to his perspective of the relationship being rocky to begin with and this conclusion was in the works anyways. "You're the metaphors I can't create to comprehend this curse called love" is an amazing line that i won't soon forget. it's so poignant to so many people who've been lost trying to figure love out. | |
| The Beach Boys – God Only Knows Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| winnie cooper had moved away from the neighborhood and started going to a different school, but kevin arnold wasn't about to give up on his first love. their schools had a joint field trip to the museum and kevin made an arrangement for winnie to ride on his bus with him. things weren't the same though as they were when they were neighbors. winnie was at a new school and made new friends. there was a disconnect felt during the field trip that reverberated through poor kevin's world as it started coming down around him. they had a fight and when kevin came back to the bus he found the necklace he had given to winnie laying on the bench they had shared. this song was playing in the background as an older kevin narrated the scene, "and that was the moment i knew winnie cooper, the girl next door, was gone forever". the show closed with the ending chorus repeat playing over the credits while a generation who grew up watching The Wonder Years vicariously felt the heartbreak of a boy losing his first love. | |
| Rilo Kiley – So Long Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| also... how incredibly typical of the "indie-elitist" who takes everything to heart then counters with the "you're-not-smart-or-deep-enough-to-understand" card...spare me the arrogance. Music as beautiful as Smith's should not require qualifications, certainly not ones leveled by his so-called "fans". | |
| Rilo Kiley – So Long Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| jillyc... such harsh words for someone you don't even know. I was being facetious when I said that in response to a previous post saying that Blake was attempting to be Elliott Smith. I think Elliott Smith was an extremely gifted artist whose poignant lyrics could touch ANYONE... even those unintelligent enough to understand him. Maybe the Thought Police can instate some kind of quiz to make sure only people up to your standards can enjoy his music? Perhaps, you could be the new sheriff. | |
| Damien Rice – Cannonball Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This is such a beautiful song with countless interpretations depending on the listener's life-experience. Personally, the subject of the song is having a struggle between the biases he has developed over his life and the newfound feelings that contradict his biases. "Stones taught me to fly" alludes to the most primitive form of warfare which could be interpreted as his admitting his cynicism about love is nothing new. Then come lines with contradictory elements: "Love, it taught me to lie" and "Life, it taught me to die". It's an age-old axiom that honesty is one of the foundations of love while there isn't anything more dichotomous as life and death. By utilizing these elements within the same lines, Rice is displaying the kind of internal conflict occuring within the subject of the song. The baggage that he has been carrying from his life leads into the most significant line of the song, "so it's not hard to fall when you float like a cannonball". This illustrates that all the weight he carries with his "baggage" doesn't just make him apprehensive when encountering these new endearing emotions, but it also makes him vulnerable once he lets her past his walls. This time he doesn't want to let his past experiences interfere with what good could possibly come from this new experience, and the fact that he's attempting to confront this struggle denotes the progress this new girl has sparked. | |
| Amos Lee – Arms Of A Woman Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This song is about a lonely man who feels incomplete without a woman. He longs for someone and relates his feeling of emptiness of that of a motherless child. I don't think he's alluding to an Oedipus Complex. He sees childhood as a time of security and comfort and wants another woman to instill those same feelings in adulthood. | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – 405 Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| we can split hairs for a literal meaning of the lyrics, but we'd be doing a disservice to the concept of a lot of death cab's music. the abstract lyrics are consequential to the beautiful melody and the overall tone of the song. every one of us could infer different and unique meanings from this song, but i'm sure we all feel the same inner tranquility listening to gibbard's soft voice over the soft strumming of a single guitar. | |
| Elliott Smith – Pictures of Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This is such a personal song for Elliott Smith, yet he makes every listener feel like the song is about them in a way only Smith can. Smith's poignant lyrics and his ability express the feelings we all have but are unable to express is what makes him a special, special artist. | |
| The Cranberries – Linger Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| this is an absolutely beautiful song in all aspects: voice, rhythm, accompaniment... and it has withstood the test of time. This song first came out when i was only in junior high and it spoke to me then even though there was no way i could grasp what the lyrics meant. as i grew up the lyrics started meaning something personally. this song captures those confused feelings you get when you're in limbo with the one you love. you can't leave, you can't stay... you just don't want to hurt anymore | |
| The All-American Rejects – It Ends Tonight Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i love this song except for the line, "i give the final blow". seems like they were stretching to find a word that went with "alone". i don't think a guy should be singing about giving any kind of blow. | |
| Rilo Kiley – So Long Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| i could tell it wasn't elliott smith because i didn't feel like slitting my wrists after listening to it. i love this song because it's sounds lighthearted even though it's about the dying affection between two people. | |
