Elliott Smith – The Last Hour Lyrics | 18 years ago |
great song. any elliott smith experts know if this song really was written by 1996? i saw a video of him performing it that year (?) on youtube and it's pretty incredible to me. it sounds almost exactly the same. i always thought it had a distinct from-a-basement feel to it and it showed how his songwriting and guitar playing had matured since the nineties, but i guess i was wrong. seems amazing to me. don't know why he didn't release it sooner, though. |
Smog – I Feel Like the Mother of the World Lyrics | 18 years ago |
“I came up with the title. I wasn’t even sure what it meant. It turned into the gentlest anti-war song, because anti-war songs can be so overbearing. I wanted to write something that made it everyday, commonplace.” -Bill Callahan it's definitely one of my favorite anti-war songs ever. classy, too. |
Patti Smith – Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
what does Rimbaud have to do with this? i love rimbaud and i love patti smith, but really, i can't see the '19th century french symbolist' connection in Horses. is that only me? |
Big Star – Daisy Glaze Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this may possibly be the best big star song. |
The Magnetic Fields – 100,000 Fireflies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah, i know, every time i see a jared subway commercial this song pops in my head. it's a fantabulous song. |
Chris De Burgh – The Girl With April In Her Eyes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
well, that's not entirely true. i'm not a big fan of him, but i read somewhere he released an album written in a complete stream of consciousness after being inspired by reading the diary of anne frank. i heard it's the most heartwrenching 40 minutes of hammer's work and even hip hop altogether. |
Chris De Burgh – The Girl With April In Her Eyes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah, why not. i like War and mc hammer, and the druids have done a lot for my country. sounds interesting. |
Chris De Burgh – The Girl With April In Her Eyes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i had never heard of chris de burgh before this, but i am thankful i saw these comments. |
Sleater-Kinney – Light-Rail Coyote Lyrics | 19 years ago |
maybe they got the inspiration from that story, but i don't think it's literally about a coyote. and dothefrug, i spent a week in Portland and the song did become that much better. |
Sebadoh – On Fire Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i hate zach braff. but this song is good. if someone broke into my house and was going to kill one of the two and i had to choose which one, i'd pick "on fire" to live. |
Elliott Smith – New Disaster Lyrics | 19 years ago |
geesh, i just heard this song for the first time right now. it's amazing. |
Bikini Kill – New Radio Lyrics | 19 years ago |
the version i'm listening to has an extra line that says "what the fuck is written all over your pretty face?" does everyone's say that? oh and that last line is genius. |
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood Lyrics | 19 years ago |
oh it just came about from a satisfaction of a guarantee. sheets. on the way, doesn't Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have an exclamation point in the end? |
Cheap Trick – In The Street Lyrics | 19 years ago |
correction: Big Star is extremely underrated. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i don't think this song is meant to be explained word by word. it's meant to put images into the mind; ones that could provoke the feeling Mangum wants the listener to feel. the song is not entirely on one subject, and it doesn't tell a story. it tells dozens of stories. the imagery perhaps is made to bring up memories from the listener's past, not Mangum's. it seems like Mangum gives you the choice to make the song about anything. the song is so open on its meaning that it could mean anything to anyone. the only freedom of perspective that Mangum takes away from his listeners is that of the mood, which is cause by the horrific images. here's a good quote from an article for people who are still trying to decipher the album in a literal sense: "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a personal album but not in the way you expect. It's not biography. It's a record of images, associations, and threads; no single word describes it so well as the beautiful and overused 'kaleidoscope.' It has the cracked logic of a dream." i agree pretty much with this article: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/n/neutral-milk-hotel/in-the-aeroplane-over-the-sea.shtml |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Ghost Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i'm pretty sure i agree with archit (except for the misspellings of "Anne Frank"). the song might've come up from Mangum thinking there was a ghost in his apartment, but it evolved into something else -knowing that even if someone dies, he/she can still live within the people who remember him/her. the message might be cliché, but Mangum makes it seem new. it's a cool song, and it's loud. it's a cloud. of intense manguminity. |
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood Lyrics | 19 years ago |
upon this tidal wave of young blood there is some salt, yes, i agree. but carving a (w)hole into our sentence can't undo the savages' realm of hypocrisy (that is, if you concur Vick's smells alright). and of course, it was the Olsen twins -a devoured set of walking sticks- who gave depth to this song. forget it. ... in end, if vanity is a set of earrings, this one wears them well, with a humble face. |
Smog – Driving Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sounds like it could be a continuation of the song "Our Anniversary," since that song says they'll drive, but not too far. also, there're firecrakers popping (or guns shooting!) in the background of this song, like in the "Our Anniversary" lyrics. other than that, i'm not sure what the lyrics mean. nice song for rainy day driving, though. |
Destroyer – The Night Moves Lyrics | 19 years ago |
it's actually, "First things first, we burst onto the scene where the New, New Wave weeps over his brother...Though reports all point to fratricide (and so do I!) cause these days pretty girls just make waves that go too far, repeating themselves through endless Night..." but i'm just picky. the first time i heard it i also though it was "pretty girls just make graves." |
Wire – Champs Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song wants to break out into "harmony in my head." (or viceversa?) |
Destroyer – Modern Painters Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i don't know how much meaning destroyer songs have to them, but the words all sound exquisite together. a review of the album This Night (by a dude named jason dungan from dusted) says about his lyrics: "His is the kind of poetry that only begins to accrue meaning once it’s been filtered through your subconscious, rooting itself in your own personal experiences. Eventually, esoteric lines begin to take on a subjective meaning." i'd have to agree with that. |
Destroyer – Hey, Snow White Lyrics | 19 years ago |
possibly the only song on This Night that's overextended, im(h)o. it doesn't mean it's not good, though. sounds about a girl who cares too much about her job. i don't know why it references snow white, though. maybe it's just bejar being creepy, or maybe the woman in the song has seven subordinates working under her, being the seven dwarves. how can we win some? simple. by listening to bejar bear. |
Crass – Do They Owe Us A Living? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song's pretty self-explanatory. i used to think it said, "fuck manchester united, there's something i wanna say." that would've been perfect. |
Crass – Banned From The Roxy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
punk IS dead. and yeah, this song is pretty amazing. it's funny how he starts with the roxy, then with the wealthy, then with what they do with their power, how the government protects their privileges, and then they end up talking about whole systems right before returning back to the roxy again. kinda genius. |
