| Warren Zevon – The French Inhaler Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I believe this song is about marilyn monroe...the norman is norman mailer, and I think the whole song is a poke at his biographical work on marilyn monroe. what I don't get is the "french inhaler" line. I love zevon, but I can't tell if this is just something put in to intone norman mailer, or if it has another meaning. I have no doubt that he read waugh before writing this song...zevon was hugely influenced by major writers, so I totally agree with scumbagstyle on that one. |

| NOFX – The Marxist Brothers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the title is a play on "the marx brothers"...the "marxist brothers" in this song are people who find it fun to be a "revolutionary". "idealist bourgeoisie" is a play on a term karl marx and frederick engels used a few times before the end of karl marx' life, "bourgeoisie de intellegencia" (excuse my french, or spanish...not sure there) which was the idea that there would have to be some kind of intelligent organization within the proletariat acting as a ruling class to fire up the revolution...which totally defeats the purpose of communism, which marx and engels both saw. an "idealist bourgeoisie" would be a ruling or upper class group of people who followed the idea without understanding the meaning of the movement neccessarily. basically, it comes down to them ragging on people who subscribe to a revolutionary idea like communism or socialism without actually adherring to it. I think they're doing it very jokingly in this song, and I really don't think they're actually calling out any bands, as this song sounds much less serious than other songs off the "Never Trust A Hippie" EP (i.e. "You're Wrong"...definitely a much more serious jab at people following certain social or political ideals). |

| David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics | 20 years ago |
to me (note: this is not how I've heard it explained, and this does not come from david bowie himself) this song is about escaping life through movies. in the first verse, the girl leaves her parents arguing (but her mommy is yelling no, and her daddy has told her to go) to find solace in a friend, can't find her friend, and escapes into a movie that's like all the other hollywood trash out there. the chorus explains the kind of things that keep our attention: the fights (sailors fighting in the dance hall), the dramatic irony (look at the lawman beating up the wrong guy), and the questions most people wonder that movies can approximate an answer to (is there life on mars?). in the second verse, we see the problems with focusing our attention solely on entertainment (it's on amerika's tortured brow, that mickey mouse has grown up a cow). the working class fights to be something more under the banner of lennon (it can go either way, but I think lennon makes more sense cause it was literally at the time that lennon had released his solo album) while the mindless richer dennizens seek out every ounce of entertainment they can find and afford (see the mice in their million hordes, from ibiza to the norfolk broads). we idly let silly laws pass, while we come to work for the organizations that gave us the same mindless drivel we've seen time and time again, and because we can't come up with anything else to take our minds off our problems, we write the same thing over and over again (cause I wrote it 10 times or more, it's about to be writ again). I love bowie and his music, and I respect everyone's oppinion here, and I think that alot of people have made very valid points. thanks for letting me make mine. |
