cheddaringo: Helter Skelter is a book, i strongly recommend reading it. i knew absolutely nothing about the Manson murders before, but after reading the book i have a very good understanding of the whole topic. it is factual AND extremely interesting.

If ANY of you have seen the video for this song, you'd know it is not about Christianity, it is about children: missing children, children of war, etc... go to www.myspace.com/invisiblechildren it explains everything.

Alkaline Trio – Sadie Lyrics 20 years ago
...cont'd....

"Charlie's broken .22"

this line is referring to the .22 caliber Longhorn Revolver with a broken grip..it had been tossed away after the first night of murders, and was found later by a young boy & turned into the police. Police didn't recognize it's connection with the murders, so it was forgotten about at the time. It later became a very important piece of evidence linking Manson to the murders.

Alkaline Trio – Sadie Lyrics 20 years ago
Reading some people's interpretations amuses me.. Posting your OPINION is one thing, but then you get people who type information as if it is fact...when really, it's just a random guess. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I have definitely done my homework.

Anyone interested in the Manson murders, read Helter Skelter,it was written by the prosecution attorney in the Manson trial. It explains everything. Including the following:

a) Susan Atkins and Charles Manson were NOT related... the "family" is the term used when describing Manson and all the people (males and females) who lived with him/"followed" him.

b) The "white coats" are NOT the Beatles. Though it's true, Manson did believe the Beatles were speaking to him through their music...the "white coats" mentioned in the song are doctors. Because of her brutal murders, belief that Charles was God, and complete lack of remorse for what she had done, she was believed to be insane

c)Susan Atkins/Sadie Mae Glutz...NOT split personalities. Susan Denise Atkins was her real name, Charlie nicknamed her Sadie Mae Glutz when he met her. Back to the Beatles inspiration...he nicknamed her Sadie well before the Beatles released their song "Sexy Sadie". This, to Manson, was further evidence the Beatles were speaking to him.

d)The "confession" quote by Sadie in the original version of the song is mostly fictional... However, the quote in THIS one (the album version) are ALMOST direct quotes of Susan Atkins' actual testimony. *I say "almost" because she did not say those words all in one statement. She was being questioned by her defense attorney, then later on by the prosecution attorney. So this statement is a collection of a few of her answers, not quite a direct quote. eg The actual dialogue was as follows:
(def. attorn.)Q: How could it be right to kill somebody?
(Atkins)A: How could it not be right when it is done with love?
Q: Did you ever feel any remorse?
A: Remorse? For doing what was right to me?
Q: Did you ever feel sorry?
A: Sorry for doing what was right to me? I have no guilt in me.

Later on..
(pros. attorn.)Q: Sadie, do you believe Charles Manson is the second coming of Christ?
*question had to be repeated a few times before obtaining a direct answer*
(Atkins)A: He represented a God to me that was so beautiful that I'd do anything for him.
Q: Even commit murder?
A: I'd do anything for God.
Q: Including murder?
A: That's right. If I believed it was right.
