It may seem that I am writing this biasly but I am not trying to insinuate that this has happened to me. Because it hasn't. |

A. He is confused (Spinning)
B: He is trying to decide whether or not to stay with her.

My friends always tell me that I like the worst Metallica songs, but then again I have one that likes Sweet Amber... Anyway, this song is about reaching out to people to help you and about all the past mistakes and sins that you wish you could be rid of. I like this song and I think that's what it is about along with the cleansing of one's soul of all the stains. But so much in the religious sense. I don't see Metallica writing a song about Jesus. The turpentine and such words are to refer to their obvious cleaning capabilites, and I have often said, after seeing something I rather I didn't, that I wish I had turpentine to pour in my eyes to clean them. |

It is poetry. I think that Metallica songs such as this do have a deeper meaning as some of you have suggested. But then they are songs like "All Within My Hands". A wonderful song but it was ruined at the end... So sad. it had potential. |

This song is about a journey and they cleverly based it on the Odyssey. It is a nice interpretation of the difficulties that a person goes through and the "rainbows" that we chase, our dreams. |

I think that some songs are written vaguely with the intention of having the listener fill in the vague parts. You all have your own opinions as to what the "I" stands for in this song. I, am schizophrenic I believe that this song is about the little voice in the back of your mind saying, "Hey, those people aren't really your friends, look what they do to you. Come with me. I'll show you what WE can do together as friends." While the voice is really using your own paranoia against you. You know deep inside that these are your friends, but you can't convince yourself. Hence, you give in to doubt and that little voice uses you as a shield. It does horrible things, but you are the one who is blamed. You didn't have the willpower to resist. |

Then something happened, this person felt that maybe people didn't deserve such blind kindness, and now they are a sad and depressed person. They aren't shining their innate colors. Their true self is being hidden beneath this... shroud of depression. That is what this song means to me and that is who I am. Man, ... I don't even know. |
