Interpol – Who Do You Think? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sounds to me that it's about a schizophrenic guy in a relationship with a mentally healthy girl. 'Controlling the agents' with his medication takes an obvious 'toll on his brain'. He's slowly learned proper etiquette for this girl: 'oh, at your favourites [presumably her closest friends] I know now not to swear'. 'The coast of hypnotic' is a place to which they go when no-one else is around, when he can just be himself, idiosyncrasies, eccentricities and all, and he won't let this 'slow decay' of his mind destroy what is possibly the best thing in his life. The line 'I only call them when I know / I don't see them' is probably a reference to visual hallucinations. Anyway, this is a rather difficult song to interpret. Would be interested in hearing other opinions, because it's really top notch. |
Bloc Party – The Once and Future King Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Simply awesome. A song about being cut down from a position of power and fame (the boy who was once king), but vowing to make a social comeback (the future king). Seems to be specifically about a band that isn't popular anymore - "I heard your song on the radio/like a fire-brand on my skin". Especially ironic since Bloc Party aren't going anywhere anytime soon. One gets the sense, however, that the narrator should concern himself more with his craft and improving himself than caring about admiration from others. The fact that "[he] will wait for [his] turn to come around again" suggests a certain kind of unhealthy apathy and emotional neediness. |

Yes, 'atone' does sound correct and fits the context. It's impossible to know for sure without the completely mastered mix, however, or some liner notes. |
Bloc Party – Uniform Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i've marked my corrections with a *, but there's still some stuff i couldn't get because of the poor mix: There was a sense of disappointment as we left the mall* All the young people looked the same Wearing their masks of ‘cool’ and ‘indifference’ Commerce dressed up as rebellion* 'Cause we're so handsome and we're so bored So entertain us, tell me a joke Make it long, make it last Make it cruel, just make me laugh We can't be heard*, we can't be heard* Drink* to forget your blues on the weekend Think about more things to buy The TV taught me how to sulk and love nothing and how to grow my hair long 'Cause we're so handsome and we're so bored So entertain us, tell me a joke Make it long, make it last Make it cruel, just make me laugh We can't be heard*, we can't be heard* So why'd* you go picking fights that you'll lose? (When you have entertainment, when you have things to pass the time) So why do you go thinking thoughts that are above you? (You can be happy just playing dumb)* (You can be happy just playing dumb)* Well I was brave, and unique*, intelligent, a snowflake*; I could have been a hero No-one can be trusted over* the age of fourteen (Tattoo our arms)* (Converse shoes)* (Cynical)* (?) We tell ourselves we’re different I've gotten so good at lying to myself Oh! All my pain and honour is used up Oh! Oh! Oh! All my guns are rusted So when're you gonna realise Those are not your wrongs to right? Have another line**, have another drink I am a martyr, I just need a motive I am a martyr, I just need a cause I'm a believer, I just need a moment* I'm a believer, I just need a cause We're finding it hard to break the mould We're finding it hard to be alone We're finding it hard to (?) ourselves*** We have nothing at all to say Uniform (x3) There was a sense of disappointment as we left the mall* All the young people looked the same ** = i'm pretty sure this is line (as in a line of coke), not life, if you listen carefully. this would also fit in with the 'drink' mentioned directly after. *** = having listened with full blast headphones, i'm positive this is NOT "excite myself". there's an "ourselves" in there but i can't make out the word before it. |
Bloc Party – The Present Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is about forgetting all the trivialities in life that keep us apart. Sometimes we just have to "let it go" and put our faith in other people. Time helps us realise this. The "present" alluded to in the song title is the ring he stole for his love interest. A stupid, rash thing to do, but it's just another triviality to forget. |
Bloc Party – Skeleton Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about a guy, a handsome and apparently successful one at that ('so young and so handsome'), who's always excelled in every aspect of his life besides women. He's under some delusion that getting this part of his life handled will 'make a man out of [him]'; he's looking for validation from outward sources as opposed to from within. Despite the obvious complexity of his character, he acknowledges that he's a 'simple man' with 'simple desires,' the primal ones we all share. Being 'consistent' to his dreams isn't enough; his source of discipline (probably success) can no longer sustain him. He's bitter with the world, one that's provided him with everything he's ever wanted besides some companionship - because without it, he's 'just a skeleton'. You'd be bitter too if you'd 'paid [your] dues' only to be sidelined when it came to what you really wanted (or at least thought you wanted). He also seems to psychoanalyze all his interactions with the opposite sex, as evidenced by these lines: 'What should I have said? / What should I have done? / The horses are here / The damage is done'. |
Trapt – My Own Design Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh, and the lyrics are a bit off by the way. It's not "Your walls are the only fence in your way", but "Your walls of pride are only fencing you in". |
Trapt – My Own Design Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about someone who's fed up with having every aspect of their lives dictated by some authority figure such as a constrictive parent or mentor, wishing to break away and forge their own path and develop their own distinctive legacy. They've begun to realise that their own desires and aspirations may not exactly match up with those who've had a stake in their fate for some time. I think we all hit this stage around about the culmination of high school, at which point we're flung into a world that really is foreign to us. |
