CocoRosie – By Your Side Lyrics

I adore this song exactly for the reason finechild said. It would be supereasy to make it just a satire on domestic life, but instead there is an element of true desire as well. I very much like milkyretina's interpretation. |

Anyone else think this song is a little too obtuse? I'm mean, talk about hitting easy targets. There's nothing innovative or interesting lyrically. Musically, I do tend to like CocoRosie. Contrast this with By Your Side where there are positives brought along with the obvious satire which makes the song much more interesting. |

And as for meaning, this song is exactly my childhood. The resentment of a neglectful temperamental parent and adapting such that you get to a point you aren't afraid to stand up for yourself, where they don't scare you anymore. Of course, being a softie, I also sympathize some with the parent in this song with the "you can work all your life". It scared me how accurate this song was when I first heard it, Mr. Stevens I congratulate you. This is definitely one of my favorites on this album along with The Mistress Witch from McClure lyrics-wise. |

Since the time we meant to say much
Unsaid things, began to change
After school we shovel through the snow
(sidewalks ??? in silence in the cold)

It was rather hard to make out most of what Sufjan was singing with all the electronic clatter and such going on, but I believe that the majority of these lyrics are correct. Please comment with any corrections and I will edit them.
Oh, and it seems to me this song is about the Bible. |

Arab Strap – New Birds Lyrics

I'm fairly sure that the kiss referred to in the third and fourth stanzas ("this other kiss") is not the final parting kiss of the guy and his ex- but rather the kiss that he has been working on with his new girlfriend. He has a chance to sleep with his ex, but he makes himself refrain, because he knows that he's got "this other kiss" waiting for him at home (ie his new girlfriend). |

I agree with notemily about the incredibly saccharine chorus which is unfotunate because the melody is just so pretty. But I find that if I just don't think about the words he's singing (and consequently, I'm singing) it all works out okay. |

I like the dramatic whisper singing, it pretty much makes me crack up every time the radio plays this song. Gerard, hey, get over yourself. |

I thought it was more that his wife worked at the K-mart. Strange I never considered them bumping into each other shopping there as it does make sense. |
