| The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Personally, I don't think this song is really about relationships in particular, and definately not about suicide. Here's my take: Title: Smile Like You Mean It **Learning to smile through hard times while you are growing up/throughout life, as well as learning to smile (accept) one's past. "Save some face, you know you've only got one / Change your ways while you're young / Boy, one day you'll be a man / Oh girl, he'll help you understand" **About growing up, the hardships, the confusion, etc. It seems they are sort of offering advice here? "Looking back at sunsets on the Eastside / We lost track of the time / Dreams aren't what they used to be / Some things sat by so carelessly" **Reminiscing about the past, remember how simple things are when your'e a kid, how everything seems possible and fantastic when you are a kid - "the world is your oyster"-type mentality, how kids always dream big, but are naive to the fact that things don't always turn out the way you want them to. "And someone is playing a game / In the house that I grew up in / And someone will drive her around / Down the same streets that I did / On the same streets that I did" **Moving on in life. It seems as if he is watching others grow up, experiencing typical pre-adolescent troubles and processes, which triggers memories of his past and see where it has led him, thus, despite any regrets, he has to try to accept the decisions he's made in life so far. |

| The Killers – All the Pretty Faces Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Personally, I thought the song was about their conflictiong feelings towards ones partner, perhaps even the temptations of leaving/cheating on one's partner. Apparently Brandon & Co. are all taken, either married or with girlfriends, so I think this makes sense given that they are probably always away from their loved ones (on tour or promoting their music) and have legions of female fans. Lets take a closer look at the song: Title: All the Pretty Faces *A reference to all the good-looking females they've met on the road, etc. since becoming big...Women throwing themselves at rock stars kinda thing? "Help me out I need it / I don't feel like lovin' you no more ... / I don't feel like like touching/fucking her no more..." **About not wanting/conflicting feelings towards their current partners. The "help me out, I need it" is like a plead to their partners to both understand and help them though these feelings. "Well how did it happen / I spent two long years in a strange strange land / Well how did it happen / I'd do anything just to be your man" **About how they want to stay with their partners and really do love them because they've been there for them all along. The "how did it happen" is because they never expected to feel this way, they feel they truly loved their partners. The "I spent 2 long years in a strange strange land" is, I think, a reference to their quick rise to success. Since this song was released in 2005, Hot Fuss was released 2004, they probably started in 2003? Thus, the Killers have spent 2 years writing, touring, promoting their music all over the world. "And you're not going anywhere without me / These trials don't prepare the ERROR of / You're not telling anyone about me / And you shake and you PLEAD while I sing my song" **I heard the words "error" instead of "era" and "plead" instead of "bleed", I could be wrong ... Anyway, I think this is about how despite their conflicting feelings, they still feel possessive over their partners. The trials refer to how all the love and time they've had/spent together couldn't prepare them for these confliction feelings/temptations. Then the "shake and plead" part is about how their partners feel. "I've been different places / Ringing out like a shotgun in my head / All the pretty faces / Ringing out when I just can't go to bed" **About all the different places and faces they've seen/met since touring, promoting, etc. How overwhelming this has all been to them in such a short time. Essentially, I think this is a song about a relationship going through a period of uncertainty, and wondering if you are with the right person. So, it's about temptation, and most importantly, conflicting feelings, because they still love their partners and want to be with them, they just don't know how to deal with these feelings yet. |
