just to begin picking under the cryptic surface of this song... the 'hero' thing and the action movie feel of the lyrics could be simply a metaphor for some indiscribable feeling...he tries to find words this is all that comes, this is all the evidence... he feels tested... the collapsing bit could relate to him thinking he cant do anything? |

as ever, i think it goes off in several directions - heroin abuse is definitely there, but it also points towards the struggle in this guys personality, the theme of power that reoccurs throughout the downward spiral. elements of control too... so maybe it does link into organised religion. i feel that its prbably meant to be open ended, and so means different things to different people |

i think it does different thigns to different people, because it is so flawlessly open ended that it is truly complete.
hmm.. if that made any sense. |

exactly. all the members of tool have wonderfouls senses of humour, hence die eir von satan, hence the love of bill hicks. hence this song. its just great. quite possibly ispired by the holy grail. if you wanna read deep into it and create deep meanings for your own satisfaction then thats great, and probably just what maynard wanted, to be a tool to open your imaginations. remember, all art is interpretation, and speaks to everybody differently.
enjoy :) |

perhaps the whole point of the song is simply more suggestions following on from existing themes on the album, the baby, the crying, the rain, the distorted language, uncertainty... hence the title as well. |

well not much to be added to what hasbeen said really, but yeah i love the idea of the woman maybe being 'satan', or maybe just in the christian concept, as in 'temptation'm, and by saying how jesus would 'martyr' (kill? betray?) his mother (who in contrast may represent innocence, being the 'virgin' mary) it suggests how christianity is fundementally flawed and currupted, that giving in to temptation, or simpy the desire toenjoy yourself without limits, is human and good and jesus himself would not have disagreed. |

well, i think its a brilliant song. some of the imagery is a bit blunt, but that doesnt make the lyrics bad, its just a different way of going sbout it. as for the meaning, yeah its a pretty simple metaphor but 9as ever) there could be so many things it hints at, or then again could be unintentional, and just how we interpret it. all art is a *tool*, so it doesnt really matter what was meant, does it? i love the whole irony thing, with the angels and yet the evolution thing, never thought of that...
song could be a demonstration of what mjk says, err howd did he put it, positive pessimism or something, the knowing that everything if completely fucked (and yes tons of references here again, many biblical yet we can do something about it so its okay. again, the whole leading horse to water thing, great image. the song seems to have a tone almost of amusement, like theyve given up on being angry and frustrated all that is left is laugh despairingly at how we'r throwing everything away and destroying it all whilst squabbling amongst ourselves, when we should make the most of thi amazing life that wev got,cos wer all gonna die pretty soon. |

thanksfor the link Az Iz.
the problem is with all these kinds if conspiracy theories and such is that it is so tempting to get completely sucked in but it just makes it so impossible to live. anyway, we live in a world where you can prove pretty much anything so i guess the only thing to dso is try and get the most you can out of life in case the world does end tomorrow, whether due to multi dimensional beings or an all out nuclear war.
btw this song completely scared the shit outta me as well, fuck iv never had anything like that before, just thinking about it makes me paranoid, dont matter how many times a listen to it still scary as fuck. |

agh i hate to say it, but yep the intro does sound pretty schismey. but still, the rest of it (and in fact the whole album) is undeniably amazing original and yeah tool down to the very fibre of its tollish existance. |

fuck what a discussion. i only discovered tool 5 months ago (yes, i am ashamed) so i cannot really class myself as a die hard tool follower, but as soon as i heard them i fell in love. i think this is fantastic stuff, people shouldnt get bored so easy. would i sound to up my own arse if i suggested that some of the ppl complaining bout the repitition just have too short attention spans?
its a great song, doesnt matter that its blunt, things dont need to be layered and multi dimensional the whole time, we already know tool could do it if they wanted to.
also i cant help but add my opinion to the whole trexor debate... man you sound like one stuck up bastard. i mean, you havnt even admitted you were wrong yet. how bloody stuffed full of testosterone are you??? its a more aggressive album, but more primitive, stripped bare, then usual i think. i like that, its definitely far from bad. and the artwork... woah i have no words. makes me feel like an inferior being... unworthy of listening to tool! but thats not the attitude they would like. what other band can compare? mjk is a genius, demi god, artist of another level and generally incredible guy. but too suggest its alll about him is ridiculous - tool wouldnt be anything without the talent and genius of every other individual. its a band, they all work together. and the do a bloody good job of it too. |

itm doesnt sound as much like he's morning as some of the other ones about his mother do, so mebbe it is about his son. but he could b considering how it would b 4 his mum 2 lose him considering she was a devout christian, so if she is in heaven then yeah. (remmber though, mjk is massively anti organised religion but it could show his respect 4 her and therefore her beliefs, however different they are from his). the lines "shine on forever" sound like its about her in 'heaven'. hmm sunds a bit frustrated @ the end... |

the prostitute thing is probly relevant, but blatantly not the real meaning of the song. the murder of the prostiute thing is bollocks, no offence, this song is obviously bout a wider issue. 'havnt we paid penance 2 the old gods and moved on 2 the new guns'? obviously focusing on a wider, global issue of violence, as kmk_natasha said. |

2 me, this song is obviously about prostitution. selling ass 4 heroin? what else could that b? it even mentions hookers and whores. the transsexual thing is probly true as well. mebbe its about a guy who, as 'kmk_natasha' said, loves and needs his girlfriend/ sex from his girlfriend so much its like sex, but he also uses her 2 get money 2 pay 4 his heroin addiction. btw 'DOOMSDAY' this song and in fact no soad song is pointless, this song is actually pretty easy 2 figure out. |

woah ackj i never thought of that, thats a rli nice theory. i odnt think thats what it is, but its a gr8 idea all the same! my first thought when i heard it was, oh darron got dumped nd was depressed and wrote this song, but yeah the war bit seems 2 fit in wel 2. i odnt like this song that much, its cool that theyv bin experimenting more, but i donno... the first bit is rli shite, the 'such a lonely day... and its mine'.
still, the 'and wen u go...' bit is gr8. |
