Yeah, I'd pretty much also agree with bipolar too. I think despite the song essentially being about masturbation, the emphasis is much more on the lonliness and emptiness. By using masturbation, Amanda's just picking up on one of those lonely things that seem significant. Oh dear, I'm getting myself all muddled up. |

Just one thing I thought I'd mention about this song is that a lot of people associate it with having happened to Amanda. As Amanda rightly points out though, if a novelist writes a book nobody assumes it happened to them, if a playwrite writes a play etc... however, when somebody seems deep and writes a song, people can often be inclined to think they've experienced what they're writing about. I'd definately go with the little girl getting raped theory though, although it probably has another meaning, as with most of Amanda's lyrics. |

This song is pure genius. Amanda has this amazing talent for writing songs about one thing but giving them a double meaning. It's great! I'd agree, its "double meaning" as such is self harm and the skin around the finger nail thing fits so perfectly at the same time! And there I was thinking noone was ever going to write a song about a particularly bad habit of mine! "and sappy songs about sex and cheating bland accounts of two lovers meeting make me want to give mankind a beating" I'm probably wrong, but I was just going to suggest that this part ties into the skin-around-the-fingernails thing because a lot of people not only bite and pick fingernails out of habit, but also out of fustration or stress. Those lines seem so aggravated, so stressed... it makes me think it's tied into the fact that biting and picking fingernails can be a nervous or whatever habit. Just a few thoughts there. |

I love this song, the lyrics are so haunting and beautiful yet I find listening to them quite painful 'cos I suppose it tears open feelings that are so large and unending that they hurt. Just my opinion, but to me, this song is just about waiting. It's about the state of hysteria you can work yourself into when you've been waiting and thinking to the point where you're terrified of what's to come even though you know you want it so bad but you don't know if the other person feels the same. |
