I agree with novadude that the style of the song parallels a heroin trip, and I really like all the changes of tempo throughout it. The lyrics are definitely about using heroin to be numb to everyday pressures and the world around you. However, this doesn't mean that the song is advocating heroin. It could be that Lou is warning people about how heroin addiction causes people to lose all feeling and not have a care in the world about anything. |

I love all versions of this song. Kurt had a great way with writing such intense songs, especially this one. I think he wrote it, because he felt his privacy was invaded and that he was being "raped" by the media. However, I think this song be looked at in multiple ways. To me, this is about being exploited, whether it is emotionally or sexually. I love how this song has a dark quality to it and delivers a strong message from a victim's point of view. |

I love both this version and the Velvet Underground's original. In ways I like Kurt's even better though. It just has a little more feeling to it that gives the song a unique quality. Also, he sings the song with a lot of energy. I love the part of the song where he is screaming out the lyrics. I also believe this song is about sexual frustration. |

I think there were a few reasons for Kurt writing this song. He had a lot of pressure on him from the media and made references to feeling "raped" and that his privacy was invaded. However, lyrics can be interpreted many ways, so there isn't an exact "right" or "wrong." The bottom line is that this is an amazing song (all versions), and it has so much intensity and feeling. To me, this song is about being exploited, whether it is emotionally or sexually. |

These lyrics have been debated over and over, however, I think it is an AMAZING song! It is haunting in a good eerie kind of way. I think that this could be not necessarily about someone old, but somebody who feels they are soon going to die, maybe from drugs. They are looking at their life (and what is left of it) and preparing for death. From reading the book "Heavier than Heaven", to my understanding, Kurt felt this way. Perhaps it relates to him in that way. |

Amazing song! Too bad there is so much debate over the lyrics. I get from the lyrics that this might be about someone that is preparing to die or getting ready for it to happen. To me, this song sounds haunting and gives me the chills in a really good way. |

To newfound finch....it's ironic that you are posting this comment for "Fade to Black"....considering this song is off of Ride the Lightning, which came before the black album. |

This is the last song on The Downward Spiral---right before the character committs suicide. If you hear the entire album, it is about someone who becomes depressed by things that happen to him earlier in life and starts becoming self-destructive. Anyway, by the end of the album, he is fed up with the person he has become and has regrets from all the pain he has caused people. He has been trying to cover up for his own insecurities and worthlessness by projecting those feelings on to others. However, his feelings have caught up to him and resulted in suicide. |

i think this can be about a girl who was manipulative and didn't treat him very well, but he still felt dependent on her and insecure because of her. However, he starts realizing that his love for her has been blind, and she was ugly on the inside. He says "ugly like me", because he is regretting how he put up with her for so long and felt like he needed her. Now he is making a change in his life and wants to move on--without her bullshit. |

Throughout The Downward Spiral, we've learned through the tracks before this one that the main character was hurt and let down, so he starts projecting his problems on to other people to feel better. Well, now he realizes how he's been using and abusing people, and he hates himself for turning into that kind of person. He is feeling very suicidal and wants to be "erased". |

it deals with the main issue on the album: control. He uses sex for control. Through someone else, he's taking out his aggression and issues. It's pretty straightforward by the lyrics. |

it's about addiction, whether it's sex, drugs, religion, etc.
"It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I don't want it
I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive" |

It's generally about any relationship that is falling apart, because the two people won't open up to one another and try to fix a valuable relationship. Instead, they are letting things fall apart and blaming each other. Many relationships can be fixed if the two people work out their problems together. |

it's about people who prey on others-abusers especially-who drain others of emotion and affect people who don't deserve it. Instead of getting revenge, he's saying "take what you want and then go", because he knows that eventually they'll get what they deserve, and he's not going the abuser ruin him. |

it's about how sometimes we all go through painful periods in our lives, hard times, and depressions...so we should sometimes accept it and "wait it out", because eventually, things will get better and there'll be something big and exciting in the future to look forward to...but you have to be patient. |

this can have many interpretations...i can see how it can relate to sex, but i don't think that's what tool intended for the song to mean. i think it's about pulling out of depression...instead of rehashing the past, we must open up to our surroundings and the new moments yet to come. It's about letting go of the bad times and appreciating the little things in life, because life is short. |

A very simple song, but it has a lot of meaning to it. He feels a separation from someone he is in love with. The weather is changing, and no matter what is happening, life continues. The "mention this to me" part referrs to his feelings of confusion and wanting his questions answered: "will we still end up together?" He may be getting mixed signals... |

To me, the snake represents his conscience....he knows that continuing a painful relationship is damaging to him (for whatever the reason may be), but he feels "too connected to slip away." He knows that this person has hurt him in ways too many times, but he is forgiving, and still needs that person in his life. |
