Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics 17 years ago
to me the phrase "Peach, Plum, Pear" signifies a change from a single young woman (ala Georgia Peach) to a pregnant young woman (her belly becoming plum-round with child) and finally to pear, the post pregnancy shape that many women take as they age.

The song is a story that takes place over many years and may not necessarily be autobiographical, but Joanna may be imaging the circumstance of a future self.

Wolf Parade – I'll Believe in Anything Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the line about taking the 'salt from your eyes' is about more than just keeping someone from crying. It's about taking the bitterness from the tears, possibly leaving only happy tears.

Antony and the Johnsons – Fistful of Love Lyrics 18 years ago
great songwriting like this means the lyrics can be interpreted another way, I think.

I've always heard this song to be more about unrequited love. I imagine two people having enjoyed a period of romance (be it long or short) and while the author has fallen heavily for the other person, the feeling is not mutual.

"I tell you I love you
And I always will
And I know that you can't tell me"

At this point the author understands that the person for whom he has this love is turning him away, leaving only memories ("photographs"), and hints of devotion.

So now the fists and whips of love are not literal weapons inflicting pain, but rather symbolize the phone the doesnt ring, or the letter thats never recieved. Or the hug that is absense any warmth, or the "see ya" that is cold.

Instead of bruises and cuts, the final two lines,

"I accept and I collect upon my body
The memories of your devotion"

could be memories of the romance. Memories of holding hands, memories of kisses placed, memories, memories, memories. I think this is the case because of the word "collect." It's as though the author is collecting his memories for safe keeping.

Shout Out Louds – Go Sadness Lyrics 18 years ago
i like how the song starts off with the author musing on what a great time in history he gets to live through. But that final line suggests an element of choice, as though having now decided to reflect on this great time he realizes that he 'spotted a great time' to be alive, as though he chose it for himself.

I guess it could be interpreted in some kind of religious way, as though there was point when he was in heaven (or wherever) and decided that he'd like to be on earth now. But think its simpler than that.

I think the final line, by suggesting that he chose the right time to exist, is really saying that he spends alot of time technically living, but not really alive...

So in this point in the song he's just glad he stepped back from the hustle hustle and enjoyed the moment for what it is.

Architecture in Helsinki – It'5! Lyrics 18 years ago
Any ideas what this is about exactly? Im particularly curioius about how "one and four" were thought to "make two", but in fact "make 5."

Thoughts?
