While there are two bits of heavily religious imagery, I think there's another interpretation, at least, that could be gotten from the song. Just before playing this song in Atlanta on the Youth tour, the lead singer said, "This is for my father." While drawing meaning from something besides the lyrics can be misleading, after he said that, the imagery I got from the song was of him missing his father for one reason or another, or missing the childhood he spent with him, or something of that sort. (I don't know much about the band - I just recently started listening to them seriously, so I hope you'll forgive me if I don't really know anything at all about the singer.) Of course, it could have just been a sort of "This singing of this in particular is to honor my father" bit, for all I know. But, after he said that, it was the image that came to mind. |
