Porcupine Tree – Anesthetize Lyrics 16 years ago
^^Yep FOBP was heavily influenced by Lunar Park. If you read the book you'll see so many similarities with this album.

By the way, this song is a work of art! I love the maniacal energy of part two as the narrator quits taking his psych meds.

As for part three, the serene and apathetic tone of the character's voice could symbolize him resuming his medication which eliminates the hysteria of part two.

Of course the Lunar park influences aren't meant to be the only meaning of this song. They're just a part of it.

Porcupine Tree – My Ashes Lyrics 16 years ago
I can definitely see the influence by the last chapter of Lunar Park. And some of the lyrics are very similar to some of the sentences in the part of the chapter where they scatter the ashes. Although, this album is supposed to be from the eyes of the Ellis' son, this song seems more like its a dialog between Ellis himself and his father. The 'And my ashes...' chorus are his neglectful father's ashes, as they're floating away, saying that even though he didn't show it, he actually was interested in, and paying attention to his son(Ellis) when he was growing up. The rest of the lyrics are of Ellis.
However, the chorus could actually be of Ellis, and the of lyrics of Ellis' son. Although Ellis never dies, he is just as neglectful to his child as his as father was.

Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet Lyrics 16 years ago
Mogadon is nothing like ritalin. Its a member of the benzodiazepine class of drugs, which also includes drugs like valium, and xanax. This drug class is generally calming and sedative. Ritalin is a stimulant. Big difference.
His face is mogadon because he doesn't want to deal with life, and would rather be apathetic and spaced out on mogadon.

Marilyn Manson – Disassociative Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is definitely structured around a ketamine trip (good thing others agree with me on this:), but it is meant to diverge around to different non-drug, social meanings, as suggested by many of the people in this discussion.

The Mars Volta – This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is probably my favorite from deloused just because of the furious climatic emotions fueling it.

i also agree with x9x9x9x9x9. I think the rapid drum beat at the end of the song is Julio's adrenaline pumping as he's falling from the overpass. The abrupt stop of the beat is when he makes contact with the ground signaling his death. It then transitions over to Televators which is the aftermath of the tragedy where the police are investigating the scene, and the general mourning over Julio's death.

Less Than Jake – The Rest Of My Life Lyrics 17 years ago
Very catchy song. Should get Less Than Jake the additional radio and TV exposure that they deserve.

I love the music video for this song which portrays how childish grown-ups can act.

Modest Mouse – Space Travel Is Boring Lyrics 17 years ago
As someone posted earlier this song definetly is partially about doing ketamine. A ketamine trip is sometimes described as space travel (hence the title) because it sends this user into an unfamiliar state of consciousness which seems light years away from the one they know on earth. In addition, the user experiences a completely bizarre stream of consciouness causing them to do bizarre things like talk to your face in the mirror.
It seems like a girl that Isaac may have liked started doing ketamine often and started going a little bit crazy and schizo., "heary voices sometime in June". Eventually Isaac tries it, and does not like the experience after "half an hour" of being intoxicated, and "want[s] to come home soon" back to reality.

Of course this song most likely has some deeper meanings to it. However it Definetly is referencing doing Ketamine.

At the Drive-In – Hourglass Lyrics 17 years ago
Here's my personal interpretation of all the lyrics:

"sucks me in, taking a ride"
He's sucked into the K-hole

"and i'm wishing for the satellite
grabbing vein pulling down on the radio"
I think that the satellite is in k-space, and the vein that he injected into is grabbing at going further into the drug's intoxication, but he wishes that it would do the opposite and pull back down on the radio on earth (radio is probably kinda is a reference to mission control which is back on earth)

"laughing at the face that's bending down"
He's fully dissociated on the drug and feels like he's floating above his body. This line kinda has a self loathing mood expanding on what ArtificialFurr said. He 's laughing at the waist of flesh that he sees below him.

"i'm all alone so far up here
and my oxygen's all gone"
He's feels so lonely up in the upper heights of k space

"bend the metal"
This is maybe a reference to the needle he used to inject the drug?

"my glory box has failed"
He feels the ego loss caused by K

"we're rocking in our reclining chairs"
He's imobilized by the drugs effect and has to be sitting during the trip

"drive away that car
that brought us all this harm"
He wishes that the drug dealer had never came by their house to give them the K. It seems like he had a really bad experience with K.

"those are the pieces of my story line"
He's just concluding his story

"i'm all alone so far up here
and my oxygen's all gone"
Same as above

"truly stressing realization
i wish i was an astronaut"
He's thinking about how unhappy he is with his current life, and wishes that he'd taken a different path in life. Here it almost seems like he wishes he could always be in the k hole to escape it all because astronaut is probably just a reference to someone in K space.

"eight hour bitterness all for whose sake
stain glass sunday school charades"
It kinda has an anti-american dream attitude. He's unhappy with the 'regular' 9-5 workweek/church on sunday lifestyle that so many americans actively pursue.

Marilyn Manson – Mechanical Animals Lyrics 18 years ago
Just as a random thought for the suicide king line. Could it maybe be a reference to the movie "Suicide Kings" with Christopher Walkens. I think its about a bunch of kids who kidnap this guy and hold him for ransom. By being the suicide king, manson is saying that he is being put in control of all his listener's lifes just like how the kids in the movie were put in control of their hostage's life. This idea probably isn't relevant though cause mechanical animals only came out a year after this movie was released. I just thought the connection between the song and the movie was interesting.

Depeche Mode – Just Can't Get Enough Lyrics 18 years ago
I've heard some people say that this song is about Dave Gahan's heroin problem. The bubbly sound (as cactusdave said) combined with the subject of heroin addiction gives this song a kind of dark humor due to to ironic juxtaposition. It would be kinda like using songs from the benny hill shows as the soundtrack for Requiem For a Dream.

I think this song is about cocaine how he doesn't want to come down off the euphoric high he's having.

It seems like this song is about your typical drama queen, high-maintenance girl that all men seem to fall for.

David Bowie – China Girl Lyrics 18 years ago
I feel like that China Girl is a code word for cocaine:

"I could escape this feeling, with my China Girl"
He's escaping his sorrows with the drug.
"I feel a wreck without my, little China Girl"
Withdrawals from the drug when he doesn't have it
"I hear her heart beating, loud as thunder"
He's experiencing the increased heart rate that the drug causes
"Saw the stars crashing"
No too sure about this one but it might be referring to all the movie stars and celebrities who have ruined themselves on it
"I stumble into town just like a sacred cow"
He's high on cocaine and feels the typical feeling of omnipotence.

Well thats just a look at some of the lyrics, but thats just my opinion of this song's meaning

another thing-
The verse "my glory box has failed" could be refering to the ego loss you get while on K

Just another thought on some of the meaning to this song. Could this song be about being in a K hole from ketamine?
"Sucks me in, takes me for a ride"
Hes talking about be sucked in by the drug on a ride to the K hole.
"laughing at the face that's bending down"
He's feeling the out-of-body experience and is looking down at himself
"I'm all alone so far up here"
Being float in K space can be lonely sometimes.

I could be completely wrong about this, but that is just what i thought when i looked at the lyrics.

The beat to this one was done well. I love the smooth blending of the saxaphone riff into the rest of the beat, especially at the end.

Marilyn Manson – Disassociative Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is using a ketamine trip as a metaphor for the way he feels. K is a disassociative anaesthetic, hence the name. There lyrics involving space, and astronauts are refering to the effects of the drug, which make you feel dissociated from your body, and floating above it. They call this feeling 'Space Travel'

submissions
Placebo – Special K Lyrics 18 years ago
Ketamine is actually a general anaesthetic similar to DXM or Nos. A slang term for getting phucked up on K is 'Space traveling' cause it dissociates your mind from your body, as if you mind is floating up in space while your body is down on earth.
The lyrics 'no escaping gravity' means that no longer how high on K he gets he will always have to return back to earth to face his problems in life.
