I'm sure this the right order, and closest to what is audible (keep in mind that no one will have the exact words, but this is easy to make out): Terrors of the night, Waiting to hear a scream (oh yeah!). [Awkward] desire to taste her Take her outside! Terrors of the night, Waiting to hear her scream (oh yeah!). [Awkward] desire to taste her Take her outside! Now I kneel in shame. x4 You can't make me go outside, (Make her make me..) The trees are vicious, (Make her make me..) The winds speak lies. Summer's arms say "Rain tonight" (Make her make me..) On horseback through it (Make her make me..) I coughed to stay alive. I first fought the knife That brought life to Skin was stretched Rules were made Pulling the scalpel. (I sewed diamonds into her eyes!) I first fought the knife! I first fought the knife! I first fought the knife That brought life to Skin was stretched Rules were made Pulling the scalpel. Take her outside! Take her outside! Yes I own the CD and there is clearly a juxtaposition of lyrical content. The other thing to consider is that clearly all the lyrics listed weren't put in. So it's extra to help you frame the story, which is why they are in a different order too! |

I've always also thought that it's a progression through warfare. We hear the war drums of ancient times lead into bow/arrow noise, clashing with swords and armor to a slight gun sound (I believe), then to lasers in a very Star Wars (but not representing of) sound. I think the title of the song contains the meaning of it pretty well, if you couple it with the sound effects. No matter what era of warfare, heroes will die. |

If I may suggest a radical yet logical point of view? I think that most of you guys are right by saying the rats are symbolism for something bad but I have a different point of view. I think the rats are desire/bad intentions as a whole and the whining by them and their illnesses ("Our muscles have turned into cement", "Veins are flowing barbed wire" etc) are almost reminders of the ugliness of the desire and when it turns bad. I think that the song's intent was to make the Candy character look like the cause of all this yet the rats remain at the end of the song. To me, this means that the desire and bad intentions of this "Mr. Howell" keep corrupting the willing and follow him over and over again. Like in the opening lines it seems that Mr. Howell was alright until he noticed something in Candy that brought out the "rats behind her teeth" that started "screaming and sobbing", or perhaps a desire for her. When he wakes up in the morning, all the desires/bad intent (the rats) are gone for one reason or another and he can move on again. This is what I think. Feel free to criticize. |
