Avenged Sevenfold – Sidewinder Lyrics 16 years ago
This song reminds me of the grim reaper. He is set forth to carry out plans that were written for him, but it is not his decision to make.

The Cure – 39 Lyrics 17 years ago
I know this is probably what the song isn't about, but interestingly, 39 is pronounced "san kyuu" in japanese, which is a way of saying "Thank You." I wonder if Robert was also telling someone thank you while telling them it was over.

VNV Nation – Darkangel Lyrics 17 years ago
to me, this song is about a person who is aware that he doesn't fit in with society. he is aware of a different purpose for his life. i dated a dark angel for 4 years. he came into my life like the wind and fixed the darkness inside of me. because of him, i am a much stronger woman today.

"Powerless I watched from faces I'd assumed."

the faces he assumed are the roles he took on to fit in, but he yearns to find his place in the universe and be at peace. he feels that his purpose is to help others and "right the wrongs that [they] have suffered." and he feels this healing role is his purpose in which he can find peace.

"In your dream you see me clear
I have no restraint, no fear"

your conscious mind may not understand me, but your subconscious understands the truth about me. i am not a set label or defined role. i am my own person and i live without regard to limitations that most people live by.

"among my own i was alone through my own doing....it seems i came to leave"

he knows that he is not meant to commit to anyone but is destined to be in people's lives for short periods as a tool to help them grow mentally and spiritually. in short, he is a healer.

"Doubting angels fall to walk among the living."

angels that do not realize their purpose will not fulfill their destiny and won't live to their potential.

"Give me time I will be clear.
Given time you'll understand
What possesses me to right what you have suffered.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward. "

you may not understand me now, but eventually you will realize my purpose. i am angry at how the world is and i am fighting to right the wrongs of others. my life's purpose will never end and i will always follow this path.

The Used – The Bird and the Worm Lyrics 18 years ago
The video and the song seem to reference to someone who is fighting with an addiction (in the video, the addiction is represented by the darker side of the same guy). The backpack is his addiction which is all that he knows. His heart represents his life which is stuck due to his addiction. "Safety Pin" refers to the fact that familiarity breeds comfort, even though the addiction certainly isn't safe -- yet it feels safe due to the familiarity factor.

Glances by people refers to those that judge him for his addiction.

All alone he is frozen in his addiction and cannot quit. He is like stone because he is stuck in his habit. He is afraid to look at himself and the truth of the matter. Reality of his being addicted is too much for him to handle. For the meantime, he will just struggle against his addiction like a bird from a worm.

He scolds himself when he is able to briefly pull away from the addiction. And these thoughts bring on self-hatred for himself, which is why he says he is "out of his mind."

When he is alone again, he gives in once again to the addiction and as he isn't able to "relieve it" so it grows and takes a stronger hold on him.

The last stanza, he is holding his near last breath, fighting to stay alive and fight against the addiction.

10 Years – Half Life Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with jojojennjo.

Literally speaking, this song seems to be about sexual temptation ("parasitic pleasures"). The guy is so overcome by the temptation that he forgets to live for himself and instead lets his lust take over. It seems that the girl has him in an unhealthy relationship (possibly manipulating or controlling him), but he stays with her purely for the sex.

His empty relationship with the girl isn't fulfilling to his soul (the "precious gift embedded deep within your skin") and eventually ends up "killing everything that you've worked for."

By the way, this song can apply to any addiction in general, since addictions generally cause your life to lose meaning.

I agree with jinxxedmaggot. The song is about someone who had learned not to trust love, but is learning to heal old wounds through their relationship with this new person.

10 Years – Cast It Out Lyrics 19 years ago
I could be wrong, but from what I get, it seems like a couple goes through the same problems over and over again. But instead of learning from their mistakes, they choose to forget them and the problems are never fixed.

Therefore, they are forming a "definite pattern to our behavior" and each time it happens, their relationship gets closer to its end as they say in "the end draws us closer."
