I think "In the Morning of Magicians" is the answer. It doesn't matter. |

| Modest Mouse – Steam Engenius Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Wow... I think that everyone is failing to miss the speed references and their significance. Steam engenius, used you see Steam engenius used enough to answer anything you need And ah, that speed. He states that steam engenius used, implying a history of use. Amphetamine/adderall/speed users experienced increased focus and energy and improved attention. Generally the ability to learn is increased. Which may be how steam engenius used enough to answer anything you need. Steam engenius, used you see Steam engenius used enough to bring my own damn doom What could I do? I think Steam Engenius is sort of alter ego Isaac created to talk about a speed addiction in this song. Steam Engenius is the part of Isaac that is addicted. Isaac can't quit speed. He keeps using even though he feels it is destructive. I blame blame that blame had grew Well, deep inside everybody knew it was them It's all on them Isaac feels guilty but can't stop. He's blaming everyone else but just keeps feeling guiltier. But deep inside he knows it's all one him. I think the song begins with him losing his car and waiting for someone to bring him some speed. He's holding the beating heart of a robot, or his desire to use, waiting just for, the speed/steam engenius. I was born in the factory Speed produces an emotionless state. People who use it, especially as medication, say they feel like a robot on it. Birds flew out as I was split in half A mechanical sacrificial calf He becomes steam engenius. These lines have deep imagery. Speed induces a state of Euphoria for about an 1-2 hours from onset. A relatively brief state for the long duration of speed binges. The flying birds reference the initial rush of a calm euphoria, and then 'off they flew'. Amphetamine effects also include feelings of power or superiority and grandiose thought patterns. He feels like a God that knows everything. Although he is mechanical or robotic in his behavior and his thoughts are controlled by his addiction. He is sacrificial because his addiction sacrifices his physical health, mental health, and most importantly himself. Human nature was installed in me Well, I did what's right but naturally it wasn't natural His 'human nature' is synthetic because his behavior is generated by thoughts under the influence of chemicals. The stasis theme is ubiquitous in Brock's lyrics. It refers to the idea that we are all human by nature and we will always be balanced by relative limitations. The rich man worries about his health while the poor man worries about his money. The worry is the same. And there is nothing we can ever do to change this. It's similar to positive/negative, you will always become depressed because it defines happiness. All the time, strength, and energy he wasted on speed (which induces obsessive behavior which sounds like learning in this case) never made a difference. No matter how much he learned it never made him better than anyone else. But he knows that he is a healthier, more stable person without it. Sorry for the tirade of personal opinion. I wanted to clarify this interpretation since I didn't see anything else on it. |

| Modest Mouse – You'll See Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| "And you'll breathe a poor man's air" I'm almost positive is "And you'll breath Napolean's air" | |
| Modest Mouse – Feelings Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Wow that was a very beautiful song. Those last lines are great. | |
| Modest Mouse – 3 Inch Horses, Two Faced Monsters Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The big show is (IMO) the social life we experience on a daily basis. Although I have no idea what three inch horses are, two faced monsters are those people who tell you what you want to hear regardless of what they believe. The irony of it is that this show has does not really exist. The people within it have conventional reality on a relative scale. Ultimately, there is no tangible existence to personalities, social life, or these two faced monsters. So you never die and you never grow old because you never exist. An concept that Isaac has explained experience with in Exit Does Not Exist. |

| Modest Mouse – Lounge Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Just a theory - LSD produces a shimmering, brightening of colors, sparkling LSD is a stimulant and often makes one want to dance. LSD fucks with thermoregulation making it difficult to interpret temperature. "The car was plush but had no heat" might be Isaac's way of saying that it didn't matter anyway. LSD is often used in a 'rave' atmosphere. LSD can produce experience of 'shared thoughts', group dynamics are more prominent. In The Good Times Are Killing Me - "Fed up with all that LSD" In Closing Time (Lounge) - "And everyone was feeling high", also further dancing. |

| Bon Iver – Flume Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| incredible fucking song. | |
| Ugly Casanova – Spilled Milk Factory Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Sounds like sex on meth. It's up to speculation but I think he puts enough clues out there. It also sounds distinctly similar to Ice on the Sheets which is also about doing meth. Just another incredible song. |

| Ugly Casanova – Diamonds on the Face of Evil Lyrics | 18 years ago |

seems like it may have some meaning in it, but maybe he just used such heavy words to evoke emotion. Bones they say the weather's changing aww, She shaw she shaw. It does the trick. |

by modestmousenirvana on 08-27-2007 @ 11:05:21 PM crystal meth and ice AREN'T THE SAME THING!!!! fuck... and i agree it IS about ICE not CRYSTAL METH. i think Ugly Casanova wrote this, not isaac. if you know who ugly casanova is you would know who i'm talking about. Ice can be used to describe many similiar chemicals with very similiar effects. It's common to hear crystal meth referred to as ice. I don't think that Ugly Casanova/Edgar Graham is taken very seriously anymore. Besides Isaac has referenced it before in The Good Times Are Killing Me, something like "need more sleep than coke or methamphetamines."- that certainly wasn't edgar. "A wholeness comes and you feelin a phenomenon, I can't die, I just keep going on..." Great discription of amphetamine euphoria. |

| Modest Mouse – This Is Real Life (Untitled Demo) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Thanks for the song Xim. I wish there were more people who would listen to this, it might give us a better insight to these vague lyrics. I think the only thing I can say for sure is that it is about a conflict between good friends. I think age seems to play an important role here. At times he sounds really innocent, and at other times he provides some psychadellic thought pattern ("And I am talking to the sofa in the soda machine"). Maybe he is showing the difference between innocence and growing up because he precedes the soda machine line with "This is real life". Real life being compared with psychoactive thought. It's really up to speculation as far as I can see. |

| Modest Mouse – Fire It Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
ok,ok,ok... i see what everyone is saying about it being to hasty to attribute this song to smoking weed, but there are just way too many references for it to be coincidence. "Fire it up" "Is there enough?" "Even if we knew which way to head but still we probably wouldn't go" - procrastination "two of life's best mine canaries" - canaries have small lung capacities. If they died miners would know that there is probably a poisonous gas and to evacuate... or something like that. "push off" - indicates becoming high on any drug. So yea, there is no concrete evidence that this song is about weed. However, it would be ignorant to dismiss the possibility. The only thing that really matters is what the song means to you. |

| Cold War Kids – Expensive Tastes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Definitely my favorite Cold War Kids song.... It's surprising that it isn't more popular. | |
| Animal Collective – Two Corvettes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Perhaps the meanings is simpler... If you have been in a car crash than you know how sudden they are. The lyrics leading to the final lyric are all very calm and relaxing. Then the beat becomes erratic and two corvettes collide. | |
| Animal Collective – Flesh Canoe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
this is one of their best songs their should be more comments here. Its about the beginning of a relationship and getting to know your partner's body in a sexual way. I like the acoustic version much better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dzhv672OEf0&mode=related&search= |

| Modest Mouse – Missed the Boat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i listened to this song a lot during the time of my graduation, and it has really come symbolize it. I can agree with almost every bit of it. Looking towards the future We were begging for the past Well, we know we had the good things But those never seemed to last Oh please just last These lines in particular have come to epitomize the anxious feelings of the time. It is one of my favorite songs ever. |

| Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Great song, the whole time I was listening I couldn't help but think of how much it sounds like Bob Dylan whom I thought a mature Connor would turn out to be like. | |
| Modest Mouse – Fire It Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| If you made a song like this, would you actually admit it is about smoking weed? It would be a lot easier to make up some excuse than make a big deal about it. I mean "we push off", its hard to believe it is about working on cars. | |
| Modest Mouse – Little Motel Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| MY favorite song from We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank | |
| Animal Collective – I've Got Mine Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Animal Collective – The Purple Bottle Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Coke would give you that feeling. But its obviously speed, like adderall. You take it and it makes stuff like doing homework or getting chores done seem like fun. And it gives you that "WWWWWWHOOOOOOOOO!" feeling in your stomach. | |
| Bright Eyes – Padraic My Prince Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i listened to a lecture of nonsense til dawn by a plagiary poet with dark glasses on he said, "how did you ever dream up that song, the one where the baby dies?" i said "i'll tell you the secret, which one's your good ear? yeah people are made up of water and fear if there weren't women present we wouldn't be here so let's make like we're friends." The first verse of Conor's song "Cartoon Blues" on his new album Four Winds. Maybe this will help you. And also... didn't Conor mention he was in a coma from "whiskey and pills" in "No Lies, Just Love" |
|
| Bright Eyes – Cartoon Blues Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
No offense HIR but that can't be right. He would be referring to Bob Dylan as the "plagiary poet", plagiary is the adjective for of plagiarize. So that would be hypocritical. It sounds like he has had too many questions about what Padraic my Prince is about. He explains that people are made up of water and fear. Meaning people are simple and emotional. And he simply wrote that song to appeal to human emotion. The part about women may just clarify the simple part of our existence, but I can't figure anything else out of it. In the next verse it sounds like he was smoking pot with perhaps friends and people came and broke out cocaine. He tryed to say no and leave, but ended up walking to a bathroom. He is confused by his addiction and blames it on life. Furthermore he blames it on time, which claims all. But cocaine softens this fact for him. "an old friend", something he can always count on. "The blue": Bob Dylan has a song called "Cocaine Blues". Now i don't have time to interpret the rest of the song. The first part may very well be wrong but it is a start. He definitely brought up pot and cocaine for a reason. |

| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – The Summer of '91 Lyrics | 19 years ago |

| An Angle – Angry Drunk Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
^^^^ THANK YOU! Its not like Conor patented his genre and his music is all so different you can't even put it into a genre. Therefore how can you say he copies off Conor you would have to go song for song because its not like Lua is anything alike Bowl of Oranges. So just give him a break. His music is good, just enjoy it without comparing him to Conor |
|
| An Angle – Self Medicate Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| two bands can play the same genre of music without being criticized. There is a difference between him and conor. Also all of conor's songs differ so much that you can't really put a label on his music. Maybe this song sounds like some of Conor's songs but not all of them and most of Angle's songs don't sound like Conor's. I really do like Angle's music though | |
| The Shins – New Slang Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| Bright Eyes – The Biggest Lie (Elliott Smith cover) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| no fucking way you can't even compare the two... Conor is in a whole other league. The only thing is that Conor's lyrics aren't as catchy as Elliot Smith's lyrics. But Conor's lyrics are deeper and more insightful. | |
