| They Might Be Giants – Hopeless Bleak Despair Lyrics

Never thought of it like that, but makes sense.
To me the line about how his despair ascended to Heaven is a comment on Christianity, i.e., that it focuses on guilt to the point that it makes people desperate, and the way to free yourself from it is to abandon religion. I'm an atheist, and from my point of view it seems like all Christianity wants people to do is not enjoy life. So to me that line is about going to hell just for trying to enjoy life, and it being worth it. |

first of all the last line isn't she's a loser, it's she's st. elsewhere. to me it means he's still in love with his girlfriend but wants his freedom and needs some time away from her and he's conflicted between his feelings. on a more obscure level st. elsewhere is about never being happy with where you are, and always believing true happiness can be found somewhere else. i think that's what it means because the name "saint elsewhere" evokes a heavenly tone. like...the heaven that is anywhere but here. |

For the longest time I thought it was "Myriad lies," not "Myriad lives." Now I think it's about the life cycle, too.
Perhaps the girl is oblivious at the beginning to being pregnant, what her life holds ahead of her, which is why she is "Eyeless in the morning." |

I think this song is about two people who have a very beautiful relationship that is inevitably doomed for whatever reason. |
