Gorerotted – Her Gash I Did Slash Lyrics 17 years ago
Funny story - I attempted to do this, once. Unfortunately I missed the bus and arrived late at the cinema, so the girl was really pissed and didn't invite me in for coffee, despite my deployment of the classic yawn / arm stretch move. Even more tragically, I was stopped by the West Midlands Police Force and fined £80 for possession of an offensive weapon, and had the knife we use for cutting up pizzas confiscated. My flatmate was so pissed off, because he had just taken adventage of the buy one get one free on Goodfellas pizza at the local Sainsburys.

Long story short, I took up croquet instead of brutal slaughter. I was shit at that, too.

Ah, the grape, the sweet red grape, dark, and black, black, and black, and BLACK. I don't want to die!

They wait for me in the forest.

What's for breakfast mother? Maggots on toast?

AH! A tree! It's a tree!

Bullet for My Valentine – Hearts Burst Into Fire Lyrics 17 years ago
I think there's some fatal confusion with the true meaning of this song. It's nothing to do with missing your family, or to do with missing a lady friend. In reality, it's to do with how much he misses beef. He'd like to eat a burger, but knows that the beef he gets in McDonalds or similar outlet is low-grade quality meat, that will completely fail to sate his appetite for a true beefy feast.

Instead, all he really wants is a decent minced beef pie, possibly from Marks and Sparks, cooked by his "mam" (as I believe they say in Wales) or, for true beef nirvana, a steak. Yet, one rarely finds these things on tour, mostly because of foreigners, the credit crunch and Boris Johnson.

UB40 – Red Red Wine (Neil Diamond cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Although this song may appear to be about wine, actually the main theme is beef. Beef and possible the products related to beef, such as buns and condiments. Another pleasant beef dish is shepherds pie, which is minced beef, carrots and onion with a mashed potato and cheese-covered topping. This is best served with gravy and peas, to best bring out beef's unique and versatile flavour.

Smash Mouth – Why Can't We Be Friends Lyrics 17 years ago
To be fair, this song mostly concerns itself with the topic of beef, and beef in society. There are many stigma and social taboos attached to beef, but mostly it just says that beef is rad and a brother. Also, what the fuck is Smash Mouth? How is it relevant to bovine meat?

Dio – Holy Diver Lyrics 17 years ago
If you look carefully, this song is actually about beef.

"You've been down too long in the midnight sea" - I'm pretty sure this is a slang term for eating beef?

"Ride the tiger, you can see his stripes but you know he's clean" - a long meal of steak, with extra beef... to those in the know.

"There's a truth that's hard as steel, the vision never dies" - to me, once again, a strong beef theme eminates from these lyrics. It's just like cow, but meat.

"Holy Diver - you're the star of the masquerade" - at this point Dio shows his true colours - of beef! What he really means is "Holy beef - you're the beef of the beef festival."

"Jump on the tiger" - beef.

Contradict me and you're wrong, and a racist.

Manic Street Preachers – Of Walking Abortion Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, the major theme is the inferiority of men, principally in their capacity for violence and evil. The key line is 'Hitler reprised in the worm of your soul', in that all men carry the evil of big bad Adolf in them.

Manic Street Preachers – Motown Junk Lyrics 20 years ago
The title, 'Motown Junk', doesn't really refer to the original Tamla Motown label, which, as stated above was a JDB favourite. It was the limp-wristed derivative of it that was always on the radio during the 80's, the George Michael shite that they were attacking. Nicky hated love songs, feeling that they were plain irrelevant and people should be singing about issues and politics. Richey additionally felt that by making everyone obsessed with falling in love they were being weakened.

The first verse is simply describing their dejection in their hometown, Blackwood.

I wish I could remember what the 168 seconds reference was to...is it to how long the blast of Hiroshima lasted?

'I laughed when Lennon got shot', a line is for shock value but another expression of their contempt for originality and attempt to 'BOMB THE PAST' etc.

The second verse is pretty impenetrable. It's pretty much nihilistic ranting, with that ultra 1977 punk first line, and that further attack on the misery of modern life as the final line.

Manic Street Preachers – Methadone Pretty Lyrics 20 years ago
One theme of this song is the Manics were at their make-or-break time, they were 'nothing and should be everything',- would they stay nothing or would they go on to their Guns n' Roses 16 million sales/Wembley headlining dreams? They were trying to leave behind a 'methadone' life -like methadone is a substitute for heroin, so the modern life they faced working the 9-5 'xerox days to acceptance' was a substitute for real life.

Like a lot of their early songs, it's mix-and-match the Manics theme: evil governments controlling subjugated people - 'intentional destruction germ...pretty hostage mass, licensed to obey', and the like.

Other themes include the generation terrorism that is wanting to have no past, as found in the 'i accuse history' bridge, hatred for consumerism 'another bought product, no reality' and their more general love for the glammy, sexy, heroin destruction rock and roll world,

Manic Street Preachers – Life Becoming A Landslide Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, I agree with lots of what was said above. In fact the 'childhood glimpse of pornography' is autobiographical,- Richey had to run outside to be sick after being shown a porn mag by friend.

The lines are 'there is no true love/just a finely-tuned jealousy' and 'desire on its knees' are strongly linked and give the song a lot of its meaning. Richey had a Buddhist-like wish to shed himself of desire, believing that without desire he would be strong (and, of course, he sadly failed). Similarly, he believed that not falling in love kept him strong (and he may well have been capable of this). He agreed with Marxist thought that being half of a couple weakened you, made you dependent. Dependent on restraining your own biological urge, and dependent on someone else when everyone else is a potential betrayer. It makes you easily controllable by the state; domesticated, with responsibilities, and feeble.

Manic Street Preachers – Mausoleum Lyrics 20 years ago
'Come and walk down memory lane
No one sees a thing but they can pretend'

This is a simultaneous reference to the way the holocaust is treated like entertainment on TV ('memory lane',- it sounds like pleasant nostalgia!) and the sheer idiotic blindness of a holocaust denier.

Manic Street Preachers – Faster Lyrics 20 years ago
The name 'Faster' refers to one who fasts,- to fast means not to eat, often for religious reasons, e.g. Jesus supposedly fasted for 40 days and nights in the wilderness, Muslims fast during Ramadan. And a certain member of the band didn't eat a great deal, natch. Some people think that 'Faster' refers to the speeding up of our society, but I can't really see this.

The meaning to me is, well, Richey telling the world (including himself) to go fuck themselves. Although Nicky did contribute, as someone said, it's definitely a Richey testament. They (he often talks about this mysterious 'they') see him as this freakshow figure, goes the song, whereas really he is a great writer /poet. It gets even more arrogant in the chorus as he exclaims he is greater even than his idols, Sylvia Plath, Norman Mailer, Arthur Miller and Harold Pinter, not to mention the members of the recognised field of geniuses Mensa.

However, the song naturally isn't an ego-trip, he slams himself, perhaps most poignantly via a line that was inspired by something once said to him by Caffy St Luce: 'Self-disgust? More like self-obsession, honey...'

The remainder of the song is more criticism of the hideousness of human condition, and to be honest I don't understand a lot of it. I hadn't noticed the 1984 connection before, that's pretty cool.

Manic Street Preachers – Judge Yr'self Lyrics 20 years ago
Isn't it 'Dionysus, here to crucify'? I always thought it was scythe, too.

I reckon the song's general theme is self-disgust/self-obssession/self-mutilation. It seems pretty cut and dried, unless I'm being particularly retarded and haven't noticed something really important.

Not sure what 'the brightest sun is the purest gun' is on about... though it's a crap line, whatever it is...

Manic Street Preachers – Die In The Summertime Lyrics 20 years ago
It's definitely about an old person wanting to die, but I think 'the summertime' actually refers to dying when they were young and happy, before they knew how terrible it is being grown up.

It's a common Manics (and particularly, Richey) theme, that we were happy and free when we were young and now we have to be adults things are shite. And there was that Smash Hits interview when old Richey told everyone to kill themselves before they reached adolescence, or something.

Manic Street Preachers – Archives of Pain Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's pretty important to remember the Manic Street Preachers were frequently contradictory in their point of view. I think the song puts across the attractiveness of the certianity and sense of retribution found in Draconian punishment, whilst simultaneously mocking its arrogance and brutality.

Having said that, I'm fairly sure Richey definitely had a hangup about wanting to 'tear the torso with horses and chains', in that he repeated the concept in an interview. I think he was talking about how he wanted to make children watch murderers being torn apart on TV, so they know what happens to 'bad' people. Pretty fucked up, really.
