To me, this song is about a guy who's been really hurt (emotionally) by a his girlfriend and best friend (being the same person). "Misused, Mistakes Too Long, Too Late" I think that, during their relationship, he feels that he's been slightly misused by her. He's been taken for granted to a certain degree, and for too long. But now that she has ended things, its too late for him to try and fix things. "‘Cause with you, I’d withstand All of hell to hold your hand I’d give it all, I’d give for us Give anything but I won’t give up" He obviously cares about this person so intensly that'd he'd do anthing for them. Regardless of how she treated him, he still loves her and wants to be there for her. He knows that underneath all the hurt and pain she has caused him, there is an amazing, beautiful and caring person. That is who he fell in love with and that is who he wants to help. "‘Cause I needed I need to hear you say That I love you I have loved you all along And I forgive you For being away for far too long So keep breathing ‘Cause I’m not leaving Hold on to me and never let me go" All this guy wants is for her to say she feels the same way about him. He yearns to be with her and in her arms. He wants her to forgive him for whatever he did wrong to her (even if he didnt do anything wrong). He just wants his best friend back... This song means a great deal to me, and is one of my all-time favourites. By far the most touching and moving song by Nickelback. Good work guys. |

I can relate incredibly well with the words in this song. I believe the song is telling of someone (maybe the singer/writer) who is discontent with life and where he/she is going. "My heart is darker than these oceans My heart is frozen underneath" Those lines show that this person realises that they have done wrong things, and that their heart is full of worldy things. "I am a, Crooked soul trying to stay up straight" The above line tells of how he/she is trying to sort out their problems and desperatly wants God to help them, but cannot seem to get his help. They feel like they have tried so many things, but nothing is working, they just can't seem to connect with God so he can help them get their life back on track. This part of the song: "O, Lord, why did you forsake me? O, Lord, don't be far away (away) Storm clouds gathering beside me Please Lord, don't look the other way" Tells of how they can see more problems on the horizon, and how they hope that God will come and help them. They are wondering why God has forsaken them and are wondering wether or not God really is real. But then they realise that "The shadow proves the sunshine" that is, there must be a God because of the way the feel when they seek him. I think that the person finally does connect with God, shown by the lines on the bridge: "Yeah, yeah! Shine on me Oh! Oh!" They finally connect with God and it feels amazing. They are celebrating their relationship with God. The last line of the song, I believe, is telling how they want their experience to help others. They want others to know, that even though it seems like God isnt real and they feel like crap, he is, because "The Shadow Proves The Sunshine" A very powerful song, describes how I feel so well. One of my favourite songs. |
