The Evan Anthem – Zeros and Threes Lyrics 20 years ago
This is a very strange love song it seems. The numbers represent different times or events in the relationship. Maybe.

Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes – The Thief Lyrics 20 years ago
Hmm, maybe the title means the singer feels his love and happiness has been stolen by the thief. Or something.

House of Heroes – Angels in Top Hats Lyrics 20 years ago
I never realized how sad this song was until I read the lyrics thoroughly. Whoever Janie is, she is obviously precious to and loved by the singer, who feels hopeless and helpless because he can't do anything for her. He waits for her to wake up after a tragic accident. She us unable to breathe on her own and thus is connected to a respirator. Instead of saying, "WHEN you wake, mine will be the first eyes you see," he says, "IF you wake," indicated both that she may not make it and that he cares for her so much he will stay until she wakes. It's possible that the singer was driving, as he speaks of "the road, the rain, the bad, the blood, the splash" as if he had been there. He feels that anything he does to help is futile; he asks Janie if she can "hear my prayers hit the ceiling? And can you tell me if my words have meaning?"

The first several listens of this song and the album that contains it, I just sang along, not realizing the meaning and seriousness of the song. Now I can barely even read the lyrics without a tear or two forming. I love this song.

House of Heroes – Mercedes Baby Lyrics 20 years ago
For purposes of this commentary, (1) is the singer/narrator and (2) is the audience. (1) and (2) are either very close friends or romantic partners and personally I lean toward the latter. In the song (1) tells (2) that despite (2)'s past difficulties (1) is behind him/her all the way; (1) encourages (2) to keep going and not to give up. (1) also seems to express commitment to their relationship no matter how long or hard the road is.

Mae – We're So Far Away Lyrics 20 years ago
First off, I came to this site to read other ideas on what the song means, not to read your silly arguments. Everyone's interpretation is quite valid because there are different lines that seem to clearly have one meaning, while in context the same lines may bring a totally different insight. Who knows, maybe different parts of the song mean different things and they all come together in one blend of an artist's observance of his situation and his signicance in the world around him and the universe?

But on to my interpretation. My first impression of this song was that is has religious meaning.
"Remembering everything
About my world
And when you came
Wondering
The change you'd bring
Means nothing else would be the same"
could be about Jesus being born and the singer could be reflecting on this impact of Jesus' life on the world (and please don't assume I'm shoving religion in your face because a] I don't really have a secure relgious belief at this time. I have grown up in church but I really don't know what to believe these days AND b] you cannot deny that Christianity has been a major world religion and at times world power for many centuries. Ask those who participated in the Crusades, the Pope, the Supreme Court of the US, John Scopes, King Henry VIII, etc. etc. etc.). BUT MOVING ON, another example of what could be interpreted as Christian is
"When was the night
That showed us the sign
Revealed in the sky
To leave all behind"
When I first heard these I pictured the star of Bethlehem that led the wise men to baby Jesus in the Biblical book of Matthew.

However, I certainly realize there are other parts of the song that wouldn't make much sense if perceived as religious.
"How could we know
Until this show
We learned so much about ourselves
From Toledo to Tokyo
The words were skribed on every page
And now theres books up on our shelves"
These lines are pretty obviously (I know, I'm in trouble for saying the "o" word) about being a band and the changes that being on tour constantly and focusing life on music has brought on the guys.

Personally I don't really get the impression that "We're so Far Away" describes or concerns a romantic relationship, but that's just me. I'm sure if we asked Mae what they wanted to convey with this song we'd all be a little surprised.
