i mean the great thing about lyrics is their plasticity. to me in this song the speaker has been broken by whomever he is talking about, and he sets out to make her fall back in love with him but for all the wrong reasons. he wants to be in the position to break her heart like she did his, but in the process he gets caught back up in his feelings for her and loses sight of his original motive and falls in love with her again. Whether or not she returns those feelings who knows, i feel like she starts to, but when he falls back into his love with her the dynamic changes, and he realizes he loves her but it will never work because neither can be true and love each other at the same time. |

i thought the line was "when the cruel wind blew" but i'm not positive. the song is too new to me to form an opinion on its meaning, but it is beautiful to say the least. |

I believe there is a religious undertone as in much of his music. There is an awesome video of just Sufjan sitting on a fence with his banjo playing this on youtube. It's is perfectly beautiful. |
