Is the line "God is dead, God is dead" somehow a reference to Nietzsche? I don't know if Nietzsche ever visited Illinois, but... well that's what I think of (only because I'm taking a course in him now). Interesting connection, just out of the blue though, Nietzsche was the philosopher mentioned in Little Miss Sunshine....the movie that made Sufjan's "Chicago" more popular. Sorry, I can't help but get excited by silly coincidences that mean nothing. |

not positive, but just the phrase "hearts of oak" (with oak being a real hard, solid wood), makes me think its about someone being able to deal with getting the "shaft" in relationships alot. Ever read Questionable Content? This song makes me think of Marten (main character). Poor guy has no luck, but he's battle hardened. Also: she can't be broken sort of lends itself to me thinking this. *shrug* |

yeah, im pretty sure he isn't being serious when he talks about this girl. Its full of sarcasm. "she even got her very own ringtone" now come on.. schlep isn't shallow, and that's got to be about the shallowest definition of "love" i've ever heard. so, he's obviously making a bit of fun of that kind of situation... maybe people that think they're in love with every new person they meet, or whatever the situation is. it fits alot of cases... and its hilarious. |
